Coffee Bean Types: Arabica, Robusta, Liberica, and Excelsa
You've probably heard that different varieties can produce different flavors. Find out about four of the most widely used varieties: Arabica. Robusta. Liberica. and Excelsa.
Excelsa beans, which are a variety of Liberica is grown exclusively in Southeast Asia. They have a more fruity, more tart flavor and are often utilized in blends of coffee to add depth.
Arabica
Arabica coffee beans are responsible for 75% of the world's production. Arabica beans are more mild and sweeter than Robusta, and come in various flavour profiles. The aroma and taste of a coffee may vary significantly based on the growing conditions and methods of processing employed to make it.
The word 'coffee' actually comes from the Arabic word for berry, and coffee beans are actually fruit seeds that grow inside bright red berries. Blending allows control over the taste, aroma and body as well as acidity of coffee. It is generally used to create a consistent and balanced flavor that is appealing to a broad audience.
Robusta
Robusta beans (Coffea canephora) are the second most common type of coffee bean grown across the globe. They contain more caffeine per bean than Arabica, and are more resistant to disease and pests. They also contain more chlorogenic acids, which are naturally-occurring antioxidants. However, these acids could cause oxidation in the coffee brewing process and could result in unpleasant flavors.
The plant is more robust than the arabica and can be grown in less favorable climates. It can withstand temperatures that are higher and does well in direct sunlight. It grows faster and produces more coffee per plant than arabica, which makes it a cheaper crop to cultivate.
Although it may sound contradictory the fact is that arabica and Robusta beans are often blended to make coffee blends. If you see the names of countries such as Uganda or Kenya on a coffee bag it's likely there's some robusta in there as well.
While some roasters use exclusively arabica beans but the majority do combine the two varieties to cut costs and preserve the quality. To ensure the integrity of the flavor it is recommended to select the best quality beans from a trusted source. The best way to achieve this is to purchase your beans directly from the farmer.
Liberica
Liberica beans are more or less football-shaped that makes them different from other varieties of coffee beans. They have a distinct aroma that is fruity and floral with smoky undertones. They are often added to other types of coffee beans to provide them with a more rich and more robust flavor.
Liberica coffee beans are available in West Africa, Malaysia (Borneo) and Southeast Asia. They can be grown at low altitudes, and they can tolerate humid, hot climates. They also have a better resistance to disease than Arabica and Robusta.
These qualities make them perfect for growing at home. You can purchase seeds on the internet from several sources, but it is best to purchase them from local producers to ensure the quality of the beans. The ideal conditions to grow Liberica coffee include fertile deep volcano soils with a pH that is moderately acidic as well as sufficient annual rainfall.
Another kind of coffee bean is Excelsa which was originally considered a separate species but was later re-classified to be an alternative to Liberica. These coffee beans are elongated ovals that are grown on large 20-30 foot coffee plants at medium altitudes. Their unique taste is both tart and sour, making them a popular option for house blends. They are also lighter in aroma and caffeine than Arabica and Robusta, but still possess a unique quality of flavor.
Excelsa
Although they're the fourth most popular type of coffee beans, Excelsa beans aren't as readily available as Arabica or Robusta. They were actually considered distinct species of coffee up until 2006, at which point they were reclassified as a synonym for Coffea Liberica var. dewevrei. These days, they're mostly grown in Southeast Asia and account for 7 percent of the world's production of coffee. These coffee beans are shaped in the shape of teardrops and possess a dark, eerie taste. They're frequently used in blends to add extra body and a delicious, tart, ripened fruit flavor.
