Why Nobody Cares About Coffee Beans Types
Coffee Bean Types: Arabica, Robusta, Liberica, and Excelsa

If you're a coffee lover you're likely aware that different varieties of beans have distinct flavor profiles. Find out more about four of the most well-known varieties: Arabica, Robusta, Liberica and Excelsa.

Excelsa beans, a type Liberica which is grown exclusively in Southeast Asia. They have a fruitier and more tart flavor profile and are often added to coffee blends to enhance the flavor.

Arabica

Arabica is the most sought-after coffee in the world, making up 75% of all global coffee bean production. Arabica beans are more mild and sweeter than Robusta and come in different flavors. The aroma and taste of coffee is affected by the conditions under the conditions it is grown and the processing methods employed.

The word "coffee" originates from the Arabic word meaning the berry. Coffee beans are actually seeds that develop in bright red berries. It is believed that ancient Ethiopian shepherds realized that their goats became energy-rich after eating these fruit, and the cultivation of coffee soon spread across the world.

Coffee beans can be grown at higher altitudes, and are able to thrive when exposed to cold temperatures and lots of rain. This is one of the main reasons why Arabica is regarded as the best-tasting type of coffee.

Many specialty coffee shops and roasters are focused on the ethical source of their arabica beans by focusing on fair compensation for farmers and sustainable cultivation practices. These companies often blend arabica beans to make unique coffees that are suitable for a wide range of methods of brewing. Blending allows for control over the aroma, flavor as well as body and acidity of the coffee and is typically preferred to create an even and consistent taste that appeals to a wider market.

Robusta

Robusta beans are the second most sought-after kind of coffee bean around the world. They contain more caffeine per bean than Arabica, and are more resistant to disease and pests. They also contain higher levels of chlorogenic acids, which are antioxidants naturally found in. These acids can cause oxidation in the coffee's brewing process and cause undesirable flavors.

The plant is more resilient than the arabica and is able to thrive in less favorable conditions. It can tolerate higher temperatures and thrives in direct sunlight. It produces more coffee per plant, and it grows faster than arabica. This makes it a cost effective crop to grow.

Although it might seem odd it's true that Robusta beans are often blended with arabica to make coffee blends. If you find names such as Uganda or Kenya on the coffee bags it's possible there is also some robusta.

While some roasters exclusively use arabica beans, the majority use mix the two varieties to reduce costs and ensure the quality. In order to preserve the integrity of the flavor, it's crucial to select a premium bean from a supplier you are confident with. The best method to achieve this is to purchase your beans directly from the farmer.

Liberica

Liberica beans have a shape like a football, which is what makes them distinct from other types of coffee beans. They have a unique aroma that is fruity and floral with smoky undertones. They are added to other coffee bean types to give them a richer and more robust taste.

Liberica coffee beans are grown in West Africa and Malaysia (Borneo) as well as in Southeast Asia. They are adaptable to humid, hot climates and can thrive at low altitudes. They are also more resistant to disease than Arabica or Robusta.

These qualities make them perfect for home-growing. You can purchase the seeds from various sources. However, it's recommended to purchase the beans from local producers in order to ensure the highest quality. The ideal conditions for growing Liberica coffee plants include fertile deep volcanic soils with a moderately acidic pH and adequate annual rainfall.

Excelsa is another type of coffee bean. It was initially classified as a distinct species, but it has since been reclassified as a Liberica variant. These coffee beans are oval-shaped and grow on large coffee plants, which can grow to 20 to 30 feet in height at moderate altitudes. Their unique taste is both sweet and tart, making them a popular option for blends made at home. They are also less heavy on scent and caffeine than Arabica and Robusta yet still have an unusual taste.

Although they're the fourth most coveted type of coffee beans, Excelsa beans aren't quite as easy to find as Arabica or Robusta. In fact, they were considered a separate coffee plant species until 2006 when they were changed to a synonym for Coffea liberica var. dewevrei. Nowadays, they're grown mostly in Southeast Asia and account for 7 percent of the world's coffee production. These coffee beans are shaped as a teardrop and possess a dark, mysterious taste. They're frequently used in blends to give extra body and a full tart, ripe fruit flavor.

Arabica beans are the most well-known, and are known for having more sweetness. They thrive in warm, tropical environments and at high altitudes. They also have a hint of acidity. When roasted and brewed properly they may be flavored with notes of nuts, chocolate, or even fruit.

Robusta is a close second only to Arabica and accounts for around 40 percent of the world's coffee. Robusta is rounder and smaller, but they have twice as much caffeine as Arabica. They are also bitterer than the other two types and have an earthy, woody flavor.

After having a better understanding of the four most popular types of brew, it's time to select your favorite brew. If you prefer a delicate and smooth flavor pick an arabica, or a blend consisting of robusta and arabica beans.
