What Are Coffee Beans?
The coffee beans you drink are actually seeds from a fruit called a coffee cherry. The coffee plant is perennial, meaning that it will come back year after year.
Consuming coffee beans in moderation is recommended since they are high in caffeine and other substances. Learn more about this popular seed.
Origin
Coffee is a drink made from the seeds that have been roasted (beans) of the coffee plant. The beans are a favored and lucrative international commodity. Coffee plants are woody, evergreen trees that are found in the tropical regions. The majority of the world's beans is grown in the Bean Belt, which includes those areas that lie between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
The most popular story about the origin of coffee begins in Ethiopia with a goatherder named Kaldi. He noticed that the bright red berries from certain coffee plants stimulated his goats. Kaldi shared his discovery with the abbot of a nearby monastery who brewed a drink using the berries. The positive energy of the berries grew.
Currently coffee beans are produced by two major varieties of Coffea plants: Arabica and Robusta. The latter is found primarily in Africa and Indonesia and is generally cheaper than arabica. There are many smaller varieties that are a mix of arabica & robusta. They are known as peaberries and are much more flavorful than regular beans.
When roasting, beans may lose their moisture, which can cause them to become stale or bitter. To avoid this, it's crucial to select only fresh, high quality beans for your coffee.
Flavor
The bean's variety, processing method and climate can affect the four elements of taste - acidity and bitterness, sweetness and saltiness. These components can be combined in a variety of ways to create different flavor profiles that range from sweet fruity to nutty and even smoky.
When coffee beans are heated they react with amino acids present in their seeds to form hundreds of unique aromatic compounds which affect the flavor profile of the coffee. This reaction is known as the Maillard Reaction, and it is found in almost all cooking. Coffeee is that the smell of roasted coffee is a reflection of these chemical compounds.
The Maillard Reaction is responsible for the overall flavor, but volatile and nonvolatile substances also contribute to the taste of coffee. Unroasted or green beans can possess a flavor that is fruity, floral or earthy. Bitterness is often associated with full-bodied roasts that contain more caffeine, however it can also be due to improper brewing methods or storage.
Flavored coffee beans are flavored with flavor oils on them that help preserve the beans and provide a unique scent and taste. The flavor oils are made up of chemicals and natural flavors, like chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla. The flavors are attached to the beans with the chemical compound polyphenol.
Health Benefits
Coffee beans are packed with a range of nutrients that boost health, such as magnesium, potassium and B vitamins. They also provide a wealth of antioxidants, which help to prevent the oxidative stress (which can cause chronic illnesses such as cancer and atherosclerosis). The antioxidants chlorogenic acids in coffee beans are especially beneficial against obesity-related diseases such as diabetes and high cholesterol levels.
Coffee is also an energy-boosting drink that is natural and helps people feel more alert and active. Its caffeine boosts neurochemicals within the brain, which improve concentration and vigilance, enhances cognitive function and helps to regulate blood sugar levels in the body. Drinking moderate amounts of coffee has been proven to decrease the risk of Parkinson’s disease and dementia. It can also improve mood, satisfaction and energy levels, as well as concentration.
Anti-ageing: The antioxidants in coffee (including caffeine and chlorogenic acids) act as a natural skin moisturizer, increasing cell turnover and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They also have UV-protection properties, filtering light and preventing sun-induced damage to the skin.
Anti-depressant Coffee beans can be used as an antidepressant by increasing serotonin and dopamine in the brain to increase the levels of happy hormones. It can also ease inflammation and pain, acting as a natural analgesic, and improving the effectiveness of medical painkillers. Cafestol and Kahweol are diterpene-based compounds that have lipolytic properties. They help to reduce cellulite.
Caffeine
Coffee is a favored drink across the globe. It has become an integral part of most morning routines. Coffee beans are actually the seeds of a plant known as the coffee plant, also known as the coffee cherry. they contain the natural stimulant, caffeine. The amount of caffeine in coffee is contingent on how it is roasted and prepared before being brewed. There are certain rules to help you select the right coffee.
The average coffee bean contains approximately 2 milligrams per bean. However the exact amount will depend on the size and the degree to which it was roasted. There is a popular belief that darker roasted beans have more caffeine than light roasts however this isn't the reality. A dark roast coffee bean has less caffeine than light roasts due to its lower density, however the overall amount of caffeine will remain the same.
The daily limit recommended for caffeine is 400 milligrams. A typical cup of coffee contains 95 milligrams. If you're not sensitive to caffeine keeping within this range shouldn't cause any negative consequences. Those who are not sensitive to caffeine may enjoy their coffee, but it's important to be aware of the amount caffeine you're taking in and be cautious about excessive consumption.
