How to Keep Your Coffee Beans Fresh
As with a banana left on the counter, coffee beans can go bad. This is due to oxidation, and the loss of volatile soluble flavor compounds.
You can keep the fresh roast flavor for a couple of weeks by implementing a few guidelines. Heat, humidity and air are your beans' worst enemies!
How do you keep coffee beans in storage
It's not a secret that coffee beans degrade quickly. In order to get the best flavor of your beans, it's essential to store them properly. However, a lot of people are unsure of how best to store them. Some people think that they can just put their beans in the refrigerator. This isn't the best way to go about it.
Store your beans at room temperature in an opaque, airtight container. This will shield your beans from their biggest enemies: moisture and air. The air can strip the beans of their fresh-roasted flavor, and moisture can dilute them as well. Heat can also destroy the flavor and aroma of the beans. Light (especially sunlight) will also reduce their natural shine.
It's not a wise idea to store coffee beans in your refrigerator. They can absorb the flavors of other foods like cheese and onions in the fridge which could affect the taste of your coffee. They can also be exposed to moisture and condensation from the frig's cold air.
Instead, you can store your beans in the container they were packaged in, or in a resealable bag. Be sure to remove all the air from the bag prior to sealing it, and store it in a cool, dark area. This can help the beans last longer, but the optimum length of time to use them is 72 hours after roasting.
Storing Coffee Beans in the Fridge
Many people keep their coffee beans in their refrigerators but this isn't necessarily an ideal solution. dark roast coffee beans coffeee.uk stored in a refrigerator absorb moisture and food smells, which can negatively affect their flavor. The best place to keep your coffee is in a dark cabinet with an airtight and transparent container.
If your beans don't come in a bag with an open valve, you will need to transfer them to a container that is tightly sealed and opaque, like the Coffee Gator canister. It's important that you note that the fridge can also be a little too cold for coffee, which can impact its taste.
Moisture, heat, and air are the primary enemies of coffee bean. To preserve the freshness and quality of your coffee beans keep them in a container that is opaque (not transparent), at temperatures that are at room temperature. The ideal place to keep them is a cool, dark pantry, however an armoire or cabinet can also be used. It is not recommended to store coffee in the refrigerator. It can prolong its shelf life, but you may want to try it. It can affect the flavors of your brew and even cause them to become stale faster due to its cold temperature. In addition, the moisture and food smells from the fridge can affect the beans.
Coffee beans are stored in the Pantry
Once the packaging seal is broken on the beans, it's recommended to keep them in a dark place at room temperature in an airtight container. This will keep the aroma, flavor and freshness of the coffee for a time (depending on the extent of exposure to oxygen, heat and moisture). Storing your beans in a cabinet near an oven or counters that are exposed to direct sunlight isn't the best option because these areas can become very hot and will accelerate the process of oxidation.
Moisture is a big one because the beans can absorb moisture from the air, and this can reduce their natural flavors. The heat can also accelerate the process of the process of oxidation since beans can break the molecular structure that provides them with their aromas. Heating also strips the beans of their natural oils which causes them to lose taste.
If you're able to keep your beans in the bags that are resealable, one-way valves that they came in, or an equivalent airtight opaque container, the freshness will last approximately a week before they start to degrade. They can last longer if they are placed in the freezer, but you should be aware since the beans may be affected by freezer burn and they could also absorb odors of food that are floating around in the freezer along with them.
Storing Coffee Beans in the Freezer
If you're spending $20 or more on a bag of gourmet coffee beans, it's important to know the best method of storing the beans. Coffee is sponges and absorbs aromas, moisture and flavors. Therefore, keeping it in a cool, dark space in an airtight container can help keep the taste safe. You can also freeze the beans, but it is advisable to put them in the form of a Ziploc bag first to avoid freezer burn.
Although freezing isn't the best option but it can be helpful in the event that you're strapped for time or travel and wish to bring some of your favorite coffee with you. The coffee beans that are frozen do not taste as fresh and have a less intense flavor than beans stored in the refrigerator or in the pantry.
As you can see it's ideal to use your coffee beans with a single hand, but sometimes you aren't able to afford that. If you store your coffee beans in a dark, cool place in an opaque airtight container the shelf life of your coffee beans can be extended up to 3 times. So go ahead and give your coffee a try (be sure to follow the above instructions carefully) you may be amazed by how much better your coffee will taste compared to the dull, lifeless beans that were rotten in the freezer or fridge.
