Treatment of Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety can affect a person's quality of life by making them feel overwhelmed exhausted, depressed and depressed. The fear of being anxious can hinder people from interacting with others, thereby enhancing their misguided sense of danger and thus creating isolation.
Treatment for anxiety includes psychotherapy, medication, as well as exercise. Antidepressants are a few options, like SSRIs (citalopram, Escitalopram), and benzodiazepines, such as diazepam or lorazepam.
Medicines
Anxiety disorders result of anxiety that lasts too long or interferes in daily activities. Treatment for anxiety disorders typically involves psychotherapy and medication. While medications can ease the symptoms, they don't treat anxiety disorders. Therefore, they need to be employed in conjunction with psychotherapy and other lifestyle modifications.
Medications that are commonly prescribed for anxiety include antidepressants and benzodiazepines. Antidepressants correct a chemical imbalance in the brain that causes anxiety. Benzodiazepines such as Xanax (alprazolam), Klonopin (clonazepam) and Valium (diazepam) are sedatives that are fast-acting to stop the body's reaction to anxiety. They can also be addictive and therefore are not recommended for use in the long-term.
SSRIs (serotonin reuptake inhibitors) aid in reducing the levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, within the body. They also block receptors that absorb serotonin in the brain, allowing more of the mood enhancing chemical to circulate, and alleviating the anxiety. Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, or SNRIs, have similar effects to SSRIs and can also be effective in treating anxiety. Pros: SSRIs are readily available, effective for most people and have a high safety profile. Pros: Some patients could experience side effects like dry mouth, dizziness and drowsiness.
Other psychiatric medications like propranolol are also effective in treating anxiety-related symptoms. These drugs are typically used to treat high blood pressure and heart problems however, doctors can prescribe them "off-label" for anxiety. They act to blunt the effect of stress hormones in the body, including noradrenaline and adrenaline. These hormones increase blood pressure and heart rate. They can also cause side effects such as orthostatic hypotension (drop in blood pressure when standing up), bradycardia (slower than the normal heart rate) and sedation.
You can ease anxiety by changing your diet and working out regularly. Relaxing activities like meditation and yoga can aid in easing anxiety. There are also treatments for the mind such as acupuncture and Tai Chi which can help ease anxiety. Speak to your doctor about the options that could be the best for you.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
Cognitive behavioral therapy is an evidence-based psychotherapy that works in treating anxiety disorders. It is based on the notion that feelings, thoughts and physical sensations are interconnected, and that negative patterns can trap you in an endless cycle. CBT helps you identify your negative thoughts patterns and to implement strategies that will help you control them. It also helps you manage your reactions to anxiety-provoking situations and develop strategies for coping.
In the initial session the therapist will usually conduct an assessment. This may involve completing questionnaires, conducting interviews, or even providing written material. They will be able to understand your specific disorder, pinpoint distressing symptoms and determine if your current treatment options are effective. They will also use the test to determine if they can build an emotional connection with you.
CBT is typically short-term and will last for 20 or fewer sessions. You will see your therapist at least once a week during these sessions. Your therapist will teach you various self-help techniques including how to reframe unhelpful thoughts and practice positive outcomes imagery. They will also help you learn coping skills including how to relax your body and relax your mind.
Your therapist could also offer tools, like therapy worksheets, which will help you track the triggers and symptoms. They can help you manage anxiety in smaller steps that are manageable and so that it doesn't seem as daunting. For instance, if are concerned about social interactions, they could start by playing a role with your therapist. Then, move on to talking to friends or family members.
Another benefit of CBT is behavioural experiments. It helps you challenge your irrational and catastrophic predictions by developing helpful evidence to counter them. For example, if fear that something terrible will happen if you leave the home, you could conduct an experiment in your behavioural style by making a prediction prior to going out, such as "If I go out for dinner, I will be sick with food poisoning." You can then record whether your prediction was correct or not.
Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy can be used as an alternative to medications to treat anxiety. Hypnosis helps people relax, alter their perception of their symptoms and modify their behavior. It can be utilized to overcome fears. It is frequently used to ease stress and anxiety, but it can also be helpful in alleviating pain. The effects of hypnosis can be long lasting and the benefits can be observed from just one session.
In a hypnosis session (or while listening to a recorded audio) the therapist will guide you into a state that appears to be like a daydream. In this state of trance, you can respond and listen to suggestions from the therapist. They may ask you imagine a relaxing and safe place, and then tell you to pay attention to sensory details that slowly become real. This is known as a 'deepening state of trance.' This is when the therapy begins to work and you will begin to notice a difference in your symptoms.
Many people find that they notice a shift immediately. After hypnotherapy you can feel the shift as soon as they leave the room or close their eyes. treatments for anxiety disorders is normal and it can also feel mystical. For some however, it could require several sessions before they see any positive changes. This is normal and it's crucial to allow the therapy time to get it working.
Always consult with your doctor before undergoing treatment with hypnotherapy. They can answer any questions you have regarding hypnotherapy, and help you decide on your options. You'll need to schedule a private session if you want to use the technique of hypnosis. The sessions can be costly but are generally more cost effective than other types of treatment for anxiety.
In some cases the use of hypnosis is used to treat PTSD. This is a condition that occurs after a traumatic event like a car accident or natural disaster or war. It can trigger depression, anxiety and other problems. Symptoms of PTSD are intrusive memories of night terrors, an increase in anxiety. Hypnotherapy can be a very effective treatment for PTSD and is often combined with other talking therapy to produce the most effective results.
Exercise
Exercise could be the most effective treatment for anxiety. A single vigorous exercise session can alleviate anxiety symptoms for hours, and a consistent routine of physical activity may dramatically reduce them over time.
While it is well-documented that regular exercise can provide benefits for health, only a few studies have examined the effects of exercise on anxiety. A new study suggests that high intensity exercise regimens are particularly effective for the condition.
The researchers in the study, led by University of Gothenburg psychologist Henriksson, assigned 223 adults with anxiety to a 12-week group exercise program that included either high or low intensity exercises. They also gave them tips on how to integrate exercises into their life. The results were evident for those who were in the high intensity group showed significantly more improvement in their anxiety levels than those in the low-intensity group.
These findings have implications for the use of exercise schemes in general practice. Patients suffering from anxiety tend to be more sedentary than people without the condition, and a lack of physical activity can contribute to their psychiatric problems. Physical activity is associated with an increase of 25 percent in the chance of developing depression or anxiety disorders than people who are sedentary.
Exercise has a positive impact on mental well-being. It increases the release of good-feeling hormones, such as serotonin, dopamine and others. It can improve sleep and increase self-esteem. However, the benefits of exercise are more extensive research has proven that it is more effective than antidepressants in treating anxiety.
A recent meta-analysis by Jayakody and colleagues identified eight trials comparing groups that exercised to those that did not. All of the studies reported a reduction in anxiety. However, the researchers restricted their studies to those which included participants who had an anxiety disorder that was formally diagnosed. It is clear that more research is needed to determine if exercise is an effective treatment option for those with elevated levels of anxiety.
