Replacement Handles For Windows
Double glazed windows are a common feature. They can wear down over time and be worn down or rusty.
You will need to know your current handle's spindle length as well as its fixings in order to replace it. The best method to do this is to examine the base of your previous handle.
Handle
Over time, uPVC window handles and locks can become damaged due to wear and tear, or even intentional damage. It could be that the handle or lock becomes difficult to open or close or not locked at all. upvc replacement door handles could be tempting to replace the entire window unit if this happens, but it is not always required. It is often the scenario that a replacement handle or lock will suffice.
The espagnolette style is the most popular uPVC window handle. This has a spindle which is affixed to the handle and is inserted into a gearbox that controls the multipoint locking mechanism inside the window. We carry a wide selection of locks and handles for all types of uPVC window to ensure they function properly.
When replacing the uPVC window handle, it's recommended to use screw cover caps in order to keep the screws secure and prevent them from rust. Alternatively, it's possible to use a washer or spacer to create a more secure seal. A screw cap can stop water and debris getting into the handle, which can cause damage.
After taking the handle out of the window, it is an ideal idea to clean the spindle and the threaded portion of the bolt. This will ensure that the new handle is able to fit and function properly, and it can also help stop dirt from getting into the multipoint lock.
The next step is to install the new uPVC handle. It is important to read the instructions that come with your new handle and review the previous one to get a better understanding of how to do it. The process is usually easy. If you run into any issues not addressed in this guide, we recommend contacting our team to get more details.
It's also important to note that if replacing a uPVC handle cockspur (also called an Espag handle) you must check the step height of the window to find the right size of handle. The step height is the distance between the bottom of the window and the place where the cockspur handles sits.
Hinges
If your windows are starting to open and close with a visible gap, this can be caused by the hinges not being aligned with the frame. It is usually a simple fix that can be solved with a set of replacement hinges. We can offer a variety of options and customise the size of the hinges to meet your needs.
We offer a variety of hinges for Upvc and timber windows. They are available in a variety of colours to match the frames of your existing windows and come with all fixings to attach them. If you have a double-glazed window with an older style of hinge, we can also supply a range of repair screw kits which permit you to cut the old thread form back into the frame.
We offer a variety of hinge styles including standard casement window hinges that can be used with a standard or tilt and turn handle, up to fire escape egress hinges that are suitable for use on larger-sized side hung windows. These are designed to open fully in an emergency and incorporate an easy-clean position that makes it easy to clean. We also have hinges with restricted-egress designed to restrict the opening angle of a window to 100mm maximum. This is perfect for families with children.
A squeaky hinge could be an indication that hinges are wearing out, and this is usually due to the rubbing of metal against. A small drop of lubricant might help, but if the noise persists it is likely that the hinges will require replacement.
This is due to plumb windows being in a position to avoid binding. The operating sash is aligned with the frame and the window will be able to open and close correctly. A window that's not plumb might have trouble opening and closing, or may become damaged over time, causing problems with the seal and appearance of the window.
When you purchase replacement windows made of upvc hinges, you should be aware that they can be purchased in either imperial or metric sizes. The sizes in metric are a little more precise, but this isn't really noticeable when they are installed. The first corner holes on the track are standard but the others may vary based on the hardware that was originally used. You should take measurements of the spacing of holes on your frame prior to purchasing it to ensure that the hinges made from upvc you purchase are the right dimensions.
Crank
Over time, wear and tear can cause damage to the window handle, lock or crank mechanism. This could affect the ease of opening and closing your windows and also compromise their security. If you notice that your window is difficult to open or close, or if you hear a clicking noise when turning the handle, it could be a sign that you need to replace the crank mechanism. If you are unable to close your window or the multipoint locks are damaged, it might be worth replacing the crank mechanism also.
It's simple to replace a window crank with minimal effort. But, it's essential to buy the correct size replacement. Ensure that the replacement has the same height as your old one that can be established by measuring the distance between the crank arm guide bushing and the notch in the track across the bottom of the window frame. You can also determine the spindle length on your current handle to determine the size of the replacement.
The kind of window handle you own will determine what kind of crank mechanism you need for your casement or awning windows. Espag handles have a brain spindle on the back that is attached to the frame of the window and drives the mechanism. Cockspur handles are fitted with pegs that are held in the frame by three or four screws that are fitted in the sash as well as the frame.
Once you've found the appropriate replacement, it's easy to fit. First, remove any trim mounting screws that are on the window's casement cover and then carefully lift it off to reveal the insides of your window operator (Photo 1). Compare the new lever to the old one and take off any trim screws that have rusted. Screw the replacement to the window frame. Replace any screws that are rusted or bent. Then, place the casement cover over the mechanism.
