Door Handle Replacement
Door handles appear to be an insignificant thing, but if you dislike the style or design of them, or are unable to use them, it's worth replacing them. With a bit of patience, you can get a new handle in no time.
Modern door handles are equipped with cover plates that conceal the screws to create a stylish appearance. However, you will need to attach them separately if the new handle doesn't already have them.
Remove the old handle
Door handles are not only essential for aesthetics of your home, but they're vital for safety since they let you lock and unlock your door. Over time the door handle could become loose or feel loose. It may also appear aged and worn. This is a sign that it's time to replace the door handle.
If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it could be time to replace it. This is a serious issue as you will no longer be in a position to lock or unlock the door which could put your family and yourself at risk.
It is also a good idea to replace the handle on your door if it is damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be dangerous, especially for elderly or children members who struggle to open it. They may get trapped. It's simple to replace a broken handle on the door.
Most modern door handles are standard size, so they are suitable for any door. If you're not sure if your new door handle will fit, try taking out the old one and measuring its housing holes. This will help you buy the correct sized door handle.
It is the easiest method to take off the old door handle by unscrewing it from the door. Usually you'll need a screwdriver. However, some door handles have the cover plate which hides the screws that mount them, so you'll need to remove this cover plate to get access to the screws underneath. Once you have removed the old handle, make a note of how the spindle is attached to ensure that you can make sure it is aligned when you put in your new one.
You can also remove the door handle by removing the latch mechanism. You can use a screwdriver to remove the door handle. But, you'll need to locate the small latch, which is located on the edge trim piece. After taking off the latch, remove the handle and strike plate. Then, you can remove the latch from the door's edge.
The Strike Plate
When you replace the handle, you'll be required to replace the latch plate, which is the hole that the door's latch is inserted into when it closes. The new handles will come with two latch plates which are a circular and a rectangular plate (see the image above that shows the parts of the door handle). If you have an old rectangular latch plate, replace it with a circular one. This will allow the latch to hook onto the strike plate and make the handle easier to use.
The first step is to unhook the screw holding the latch plate. The screws are typically tight and require a lot of force to loosen them. It might be beneficial to have a second person help with this task if you can.
Once the screws are removed, the latch plate should slide out of the door with ease. If it is stuck or doesn't move, use a small nail file to scratch around the edges of the latch plate. This may help free the plate.
You can now move on to preparing the new door strike plate to be installed. Using the wood screws that came with the new handles, screw the latch plate onto the inside of the doorjamb. Be careful not to tighten too much the screws, as this can damage the strike plate.
If you're unsure whether the latch plate is in its proper position, shut and open the door to check whether it latches and closes correctly. If it doesn't you'll have to adjust the strikeplate either up or down, forward or back until the door shuts correctly.
If the door is still jiggling or moving, it may be necessary to expand the hole for the latch in the strike plate. This is more frequent in older doors, however it could also be caused by wear and tear hinge mortises that are too narrow or not the right size for the latch, or due to a broken or damaged strike plate. If this is the situation you can use a metal file instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.
Removing the Latch
The latch is the metal piece that is angled that moves in and out of the hole that runs along the inside edge of your door. The latch is pushed forward when you turn the handle. Read Even more hooks into a hole on the door's frame so that the door is closed. If your door is wobbling when you close it, replacing the latch could be all you need to correct the issue.
The screws that support the door latch are difficult to locate, but you can usually insert a screwdriver into a small hole on the trim plate and pry the latch off. After removal of the trim plate you should be able to remove the latch and the bolts that hold it and the spindle that holds it.
If the latch won't release you can try using an old-fashioned paper clip or tool to spring it loose from the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the recessed slot of the latch and then gently twist or jiggle until you feel the that the latch and handle begin to break off. You may have to repeat this procedure several times before you are able to remove the latch.
After the old latch is removed it should be possible to move the new latch into the slot with no problems. Use your new screws to connect the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it's properly positioned in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers.
Take note of the backset (the distance between the centre of the large hole in the door's front and the edge) prior to installing the new handle. Also, ensure that the latch size on the new handle is in line with this measurement.
If you're replacing the latch or handle or handle, or if your previous lock cylinder is damaged, then you'll need an entirely new one. If you're not switching locks the new lock will fit into your existing recess and will work with your current keys. Pick a latch that has rectangular cover plates to match your existing handles.
Take off the cover plate
You can replace your door handles with a contemporary rose and lever designs to enhance the appearance of your home. You can buy complete sets with matching escutcheons, privacy adaptors and escutcheons.
To replace an internal door handle take off the cover plate (or rose) that protects the screws and the inner mechanism. Utilize a flathead to take off the plate. It may have a slot along one edge or be held in place by pins.
After the cover plate is removed, remove the screw that holds the inside handle in place, and then set it aside. Remove the screws that hold both the outer and inner plates. You can loosen them by using a Philips Screwdriver. Then, you can remove the outer plates and latch plate from the door and put them aside.
Not all doors have this gap. If yours does not have a handle, you'll need to make a hole through the door. The process for doing this is the same procedure opening a door using a lock, but you'll need to take extra care not to damage the frame or door.
After drilling the holes then you'll need to install new screws for the door knob. Make sure to buy the same size as the previous ones, so you do not end up with a handle that's too tight or loose. Installing a new strike rod and latch is also required. They aren't included in all door handle sets.
