Choosing uPVC Replacement Window Handles
Window handles are a fundamental part of uPVC frames and must match the frame. The key is the spindle's length, which determines whether your new uPVC handle will fit.
Use the table below as a quick guide to measure the length of the spindle of your uPVC handle. This will ensure that you purchase the correct replacement window handle for your double-glazed window.
Espag Handle
Espag handles are typically found on upvc (but they're also found in timber and aluminum). They have a square spindle that extends from the back of the handle, and is inserted into the multi-point lock mechanism that is attached to the window. By turning the handle, you operate the system that locks and unlocks the locking points around the window.
Window handles from Espag come in a number of options that differ according to the style you pick and the function you'd like to achieve from them. Some have an option to push-button to lock the' closed position and key-locking (and non-locking for fire escape when needed). Many of them meet the Secure by Design specification to add an additional level of security. They also come with a range of different lengths of spindles, which can be adjusted by using spindle sleeves that reduce the size of the protruding spindle.
The handles we provide in espagnolette have been tested by Yale to ensure they are up to the standards you'd expect from such an established brand. They are suitable for upvc, timber and aluminum windows. We have a variety of colors to choose from, as well as an option to match the handle to your hinges.
Another crucial aspect of espagnolette handles is their step height. This is the distance between the top of the handle and the point at which it rests on the frame. It's important to get this right to ensure a tight, secure fit. Fortunately, a majority of our handles are in line with industry standards, with 43mm between the screw hole centres.
You can choose between straight or Cranked handles. Cranked handles are perfect for situations where the espagnolette handle is going to be situated close to the edge of the frame as they will give you more clearance for opening the window.
Our range of replacement handles made from upvc includes a variety of styles, finishes and colors to match your decor, including polished chrome, satin nickel and antique brass. Some of our handles include a soft-close mechanism that can reduce the sound of windows slamming shut.
Cockspur Handle
The Cockspur Window Handle is a handle made specifically for the fabricator who wishes to provide their customers a stylish and premium design. These handles are compatible with either uPVC windows or aluminium frames. They function by using spurs that lock over the frame's edge to secure the window. The window handle can also be locked so that it can only be opened when it is pushed. This gives you additional security. The handle comes in 5 different finishes with both left hand and right hand versions allowing the fabricator to meet the needs of a wider variety of windows.
The window handle of the cockspur is supplied with three packing pieces of different thicknesses. This allows them to be adjusted to a range of sizes for backsets. Each packer can be removed from the handle nose or added to the step size to create a different distance between 9mm and 21mm. The handle comes in both left and right handed versions, with straight or curved noses.
It is crucial to determine the height of your current handle before purchasing a new handle to ensure that it will fit properly. A wrong handle can cause a range of issues, including the inability of the window to be closed. upvc door handle www.repairmywindowsanddoors.co.uk can be a problem for homeowners and cause unnecessary stress.
A cockspur is a handle that is found on older uPVC wood, aluminium and timber windows. These handles don't have windows with integrated locks unlike Espag handles that are used on modern windows. They come with a shootbolt or Espagnolette bar lock.
The handle espagnolette (often abbreviated as 'espag" or 'espag") is the most commonly used handle found on new uPVC Casement Windows. When you turn the handle espagnolette it engages a Yale Encloser locking system which is much more secure than a conventional cockspur or british standard handle. This is because when you turn the espagnolette handle it turns multiple locks in the window frame to secure it.
Turn and Tilt Handle
These windows are popular with people who want to improve the airflow in their homes as well as add a layer of security. As their name suggests, these windows have a tilt and turn function that permits them to turn at 90 degrees to provide a small opening, or drop down to a hopper style for complete ventilation. The dual function gives them an attractive appearance which can enhance the awe factor of your double glazed windows.
Tilt and turn windows are more complex compared to other types of double-glazed windows, which can increase the cost since they require more components and a lot of labor during installation. They are worth the investment because they increase the value of your home and bring many advantages to your home.
A major benefit is that they allow you to clean windows from inside without the need for ladders outside. This is perfect for those who live in high rise buildings or flats as it removes the need to leave and the risk of falling from the height. Tilt and turn windows also offer added security as windows lock when they are in a tilted or turned position which means that intruders who want to get inside cannot access them from the inside.
Often you will find these handles typically on European style windows, specifically those in Germany however, you can also find them installed in UK homes. The uPVC handle replacement is typically an a spindle-based model. It uses 7mm spindles that are available in lengths of 38mm, 44mm and 32mm. The base of the handle also tends to be wider than the majority of handles. This is why they are referred to as a tilt-safe window handle since it can only be rotated to open the window after it has been locked into either an open or tilt position.
To replace a uPVC window handle that is tilted and turns, you need to first remove the old handle with a screwdriver. The screws are usually hidden behind a sprung loaded backplate. Simply lift it and twist it to reveal the two screw holes. With an instrument such as a ruler or tape measure, you can then measure the distance between these two screws, which will typically be 43mm centre to center. Once you've determined the measurement you can then order the right handle size to be a perfect fit for your uPVC windows.
