It is also recommended to replace the handle on your door if it is damaged or broken. A broken door handle can be very dangerous, especially when your children or elderly family members have difficulty opening it and end up trapped within. It's simple to replace a damaged handle on the door.

Modern door handles are typically standard sizes and should fit any door. If you aren't sure if your new door handle will work, remove the old one and measure its housing holes. This will let you buy the right size door handle.

The easiest method to take off the handle from your door is to remove it from the door itself. Usually you'll need a screwdriver. However certain door handles come with the cover plate which hides the mounting screws so you'll need to pry off this cover plate to get access to the screws beneath. After removing the old handle, take note of the way in which the spindle has been connected. upvc replacement door handles Repair My Windows And Doors will assist you in aligning the new handle.

You can also remove the door handle by uncrewing it from the latch mechanism. This is usually done using a screwdriver but you'll need to find the small latch, which should be just to the left of the trim piece. After you have removed the latch, you can take the handle off the strike plate, and then the latch from the door edge.

Remove the Strike Plate

You'll have to replace your latch plate when you replace the handle. This is the plate that holds the hole through which the door's latch hooks in when the door is closed. The new handles will come with two latch plates: a rectangular and circular plate (see the image above that shows the parts of a door handle). If you have a rectangular latch plate, you can replace it with an oval one. This will allow the latch to hook onto the strike plate, making the handle more convenient.

The first step is to take off the screw holding the latch plate. The screws are often quite tight and require a fair amount of force to loosen them. It might be beneficial to get a second person to assist in this area if it is possible.

The latch plate should be removed from the door after the screws have been removed. If it's stuck or won't move then use a small nail file to scrape the edges of the latch plate. This can sometimes free up the plate.

Now, you can proceed to making the new door strike plate to be installed. Using the wood screws that were included with your new handles, screw the latch plate to the inside of the doorjamb. Do not overtighten your screws as this could cause damage to the strike plate.

If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in the right position, try closing and opening the door to determine if it closes and latches correctly. If it doesn't then you'll have to adjust the strike plate upwards or down, or even forward or back until the door shuts and latches correctly.

If the door is moving or jiggling, then you may need to increase the size of the hole for latching in the strike plate. This is more frequent on older doors. It could be caused by wear and tear, hinges that are too small, a incorrect size of the latch or damaged strike plate. If this is the situation, use a metal filing instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Take off the Latch

The latch is the metal piece that is angled that is able to move in and out of the hole on the inside edge of your door. The latch moves forward when you turn the handle. It also connects to an opening in the frame of the door to keep the door closed. If your door is wobbling when you close, an upgrade to the latch could be all you need to fix the problem.

The screws that secure the door latch are difficult to locate however, you can use a screwdriver to make a small hole in the trim plate, and then pull the latch off. After removal of the trim plate you will be able to pull off the latch and the bolts that hold it in place and the spindle in position.

If the latch won't release it is suggested to use the clip of a paper or tool to free it from the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the latch's slot that is recessed and gently move it around until you feel the latch and handle begin to split. You may need repeat this process a few times before you are able to take the latch off.

You should be able to slide the new latch into its slot with no issues after you've removed the old one. Make sure that the latch is correctly positioned in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers and then use the new screws to secure it to the strike plate and door frame.

Take note of the backset (the distance between the center of the large hole in the front of the door and the edge) before installing the new handle. Also, make sure that the size of the latch on the new handle matches this measurement.

If you are replacing the latch or handle or handle, or if your previous lock cylinder has been damaged, then you will need a new one. If you're not switching locks, a new lock should fit into your existing recess and also work with your existing keys. Be sure to select a latch with rectangular cover plates that match the handles you have.
