Door handles appear to be a small detail, but if you dislike the appearance of the handles or are finding them difficult to use, it's worth replacing them. Installing a new door handle is simple if you've got patience.

Modern door handles are equipped with cover plates that conceal the screws to give them a beautiful appearance. However, you'll need to attach them separately if your new handle doesn't have them attached already.

Remove the handle that was previously used

The door handle is not just a decorative feature for your home, but it's also a safety feature that allows you to lock and unlock your door. However, as time passes, your door handle may lose its grip, appear loose, or look old and worn. This is a good indication that it's time to replace your door handle.

If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it may be time to replace it. This is a serious problem since you won't be capable of locking or unlocking the door, which could put your family and yourself at risk.

The first step is to unhook the screw that holds the latch plate. The screws are typically tight and require a lot of force to loosen them. If you are able, it could be helpful to have another person help with this process.

Once the screws are removed and the latch plate will slide out of the door easily. If the latch plate is stuck or won't move use a small file to scrape the edges. This may help free the plate.

Now you can prepare the new strike plate to be installed. With the wood screws that came with your new handles, attach the latch plate to the inside of the doorjamb. Do not tighten the screws too much as this could cause damage to the strike plate.


If you are not sure whether the latch plate is in the correct position, shut and then open the door to determine whether it locks and closes properly. If not, you will need to adjust the strikeplate upwards or down or forward or back until the door closes correctly.

If the door is moving or jiggling, it may be necessary to expand the latch hole in the strike plate. This is more common with older doors, but could be due to wear and tear hinge mortises that are not deep enough or not the right size for the latch, or because of a broken or damaged strike plate. If this is the situation, follow the same procedure to adjust the strike plate, using a metal file instead of a chisel and hammer.

Take off the Latch

The latch is the metal piece that is angled that slides in and out of the hole on the inside edge of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes the latch forward and allows you to open the door. It also connects to an opening in the frame of the door to keep the door shut. If your door shakes when you close, a new latch may be the only thing needed to fix the problem.

The screws that support the door latch are hard to spot, but you can usually use a screwdriver to make an insignificant hole on the trim plate and then pry the latch off. After you've removed your trim plate, it will be simple to remove the latch and the bolts that keep the latch and spindle in the position.

If the latch cannot be easily removed then use a paperclip tool to take it off the handle mechanism. Insert window handles into the slot for the latch that is recessed. gently twist or jiggle it until you feel the handle and latch begin to split. You may have to repeat this process several times before you are able to remove the latch.

After the old latch is removed and the old latch is removed, you should be able to slide the new latch into the slot without problems. Make sure that the latch is positioned correctly in the slot and is aligned with the screw chambers and then use your new screws to fasten it to the strike plate and door frame.

Before you install the new handle, make sure to measure your current backset (the distance from the centre of the big hole on the front surface of the door to the edge). Verify that the size of the latch of the new handle is equal to the measurement.

If you're replacing the latch or handle, or if your old lock cylinder has been damaged, then you'll require a new one. If you're not changing the locks, the new latch will fit into your existing recess and will work with the keys you have currently. Be sure to choose the latch with a rectangular cover plate that match the handles you have.

Take off the cover plate
