Replacement Handles For Windows
Double-glazed windows are a common feature. As time passes, they could be worn out or rusty.
To replace a UPVC window handle, you have to know the length of the spindle of the handle you are replacing and also the fixings. This can be accomplished by looking at the base of the handle that was previously used.
Handle
Over time uPVC handles and window locks may be damaged due to wear and tear or by accidental or deliberate damage. It could be that the handle or lock becomes difficult to close or open or not even locked. It's tempting to replace the entire window unit if this occurs, but it's not always required. Most of the time, it's the scenario that a replacement handle or lock will suffice.
The most common type of uPVC window handle is the espagnolette. It has a spindle that protrudes from the handle and slots into a gearbox that operates the multipoint locking mechanism within the window. We carry a wide selection of locks and handles for all types uPVC window to ensure they function properly.
When replacing a uPVC window handle, it's an ideal idea to use screw cap caps to cover the screws to ensure the screws are secure and protect them from corrosion. You can also make use of a spacer, washer or other sealant to ensure a more secure fit. A screw cap can stop water and debris getting into the handle, which can cause damage.
After you have removed the handle from the window, it's an ideal idea to clean both the spindle as well as the threaded portion of the bolt. This will ensure that the handle fits and functions correctly and also keep dirt out of the multipoint lock.
It's now time to put in the new uPVC handle. It is important to go through the directions that come with your new handle and take a look at the handle you had previously to get a better idea of how to do it. Usually, the process is simple. If you run into any issues that aren't addressed in this guide, we recommend contacting our team to get more information.
It is also important to note that if replacing a uPVC handle cockspur (also called an Espag handle) you'll need to check the step height of the window in order to determine the appropriate size of handle. The step height is the distance between the base of the window and the point where the handle of the cockspur is.
Hinges
If your windows are starting to open and close with a visible gap, it could be due to the hinges not being aligned with the frame. It's usually a straightforward fix that can be resolved with a set of replacement hinges. We have a variety of different options, and can even customise the size of the hinges to suit your needs.
If you have a conventional wooden or upvc window, we can provide an array of various kinds of window hinges. These are available in a choice of colours to fit with your existing window frames and include all fixings needed to install. We can provide repair screws for double glazed windows using older hinges. This will allow you to cut the old thread back into the frame.
We have a variety of different hinge types including standard casement window hinges that can be used with a normal or tilt and turn handle, through to fire escape egress hinges for use on larger-sized side hung windows. These hinges are designed to fully open in a crisis and come with an easy-cleaning feature. We also have restricted egress hinges that are designed to restrict the opening angle of the window to 100mm maximum, ideal for family homes with children.
A squeaky hinge could be an indication that the hinges are worn out, this is often due to the rubbing of metal against metal. If the noise persists an ounce of lubricant can aid.
The windows that are plumb help to avoid the need for binding, which means that the operating sash of the window is in line with the frame, which ensures that it can be closed and opened properly. A window that isn't plumb may have difficulty opening and closing or become stretched over time, which can cause problems with the seal and appearance of the window.
When purchasing replacement upvc window hinges be aware that they are available in imperial or sizes in metric. In general, the size in metric is a bit more precise but this is not really evident when they are fitted. The first corner fixing holes on the track and arm are of a standard size, but the rest may differ in length based on the hardware that was originally used. It is important to measure the hole spacings of your frame to make sure that the hinges made from upvc you buy are the right dimensions.
Crank
Over time, wear and tear could cause damage to your window handle the lock, crank mechanism or even the handle. pop over here can make it more difficult to open and close your windows. It can also impact their security. If your window is difficult to open or shut or if you hear a clicking sound when turning the handle it could indicate that you need to replace the mechanism. If you're not able to secure your window or the multipoint lock is broken, it may also be worthwhile to consider replacing this part of the hardware, too.
It's easy to replace the window crank with minimum effort. However, it's crucial that you purchase the correct size replacement. Make sure that the replacement has the same step height as your old one that can be established by measuring the distance between the crank arm guide bushing and the notch that runs along the track running across the bottom of the window frame. You can also measure the length of the spindle on your current handle to determine the size of a replacement.
The type of window handle you own will determine what kind of crank mechanism is required for your casement or awning windows. Espag handles have a mental spindle on the back that is connected to the window frame and controls the window mechanism, while cockspur handles have pegs which are fixed in place with screws of three or four which are fitted into the frame and sash.
It's easy to replace the window operator after you've identified the correct replacement. Remove any trim mounting screws from the casement cover, and gently lift the cover off to reveal the innards of the window operator (Photo 1). Compare the new operating lever to the old one and remove any trim screws that have rusted. Then, attach the replacement to the window frame, and replace any screws that were damaged or bent, and then place the casement cover back over the mechanism.
