Replacement Handles For Windows
Double-glazed windows are a popular feature. As time passes, they may get rusty or worn out.
To replace a UPVC window handle, you will need to know the spindle length of the handle you are replacing and its fixings. The best way to do this is to examine the base of your old handle.
Handle
Over time, uPVC window handles and locks can become damaged due to wear and tear, or accidental or intentional damage. It could be that the handle or lock becomes difficult to close or open or not even locked. It may be tempting to replace the entire window unit when this happens, but it is not always required. It's usually the case that a replacement handle or lock will suffice.
The most commonly used type of uPVC window handle is the espagnolette style. The handle is equipped with an outer spindle that extends out of the handle. It slots into a gearbox which operates the multipoint locking system within the window. We have a range of replacement handles and locks for all kinds of uPVC window to ensure they work together properly.
When replacing the uPVC window handle it is a good idea to use screw cap caps to cover the screws to secure the screws and prevent them from rust. You can also employ a washer, spacer or other sealant to ensure a more secure fit. A screw cap that is on the handle will also keep water and debris from getting into the handle and causing damage.
After taking the handle out of the window, it is a good idea for you to clean the spindle and the threaded portion of the bolt. This will ensure that the handle fits and functions correctly and also stop dirt from entering the multipoint lock.
Next it's time to install the new uPVC handle. upvc replacement door handles Repair My Windows And Doors is important to go through the directions that come with the new handle and review the previous one to get a better idea of how it's done. The process is usually easy. If you run into any issues that aren't addressed in this guide, we suggest contacting our team to get more information.
It's also worth noting that if you're replacing a uPVC cockspur handle (also known as an Espag handle) you'll need to determine the height of the steps on the window in order to find the right size of handle. The step height is the distance between the base of the window and the location where the handle of the cockspur is.
Hinges
The hinges may not be aligned with the window frame If your windows begin to open and close with a visible space. It is usually a simple fix that can be solved with a set of replacement hinges. We offer a range of different options and even customize the size of the hinges to suit your needs.
We can provide a variety of hinges for Upvc and timber windows. They are available in a variety of colors to match the existing window frames. They are also supplied with all the fixings required to install them. If you have a double glazed window with an older style of hinge, we are able to provide a variety of repair screw kits which allow you to re-cut the thread from the previous form back into the frame.
We offer a variety of different hinge types including traditional casement window hinges that can be used with a normal or tilt and turn handle, through to fire escape egress hinges that are suitable for use on larger side-hung windows. They are designed to open fully in the event of a crisis and incorporate an easy-clean position for ease of cleaning. We also have hinges with restricted-egress, which are designed to limit the opening angle of a window to a maximum of 100mm. This is ideal for households with children.
The sound of a hinge squeaking could indicate that the hinges need to be replaced. This is typically due to metal hitting metal. A small drop of lubricant can help, however when the noise continues to recur, it is likely that the hinges will need to be replaced.
The windows that are plumb help to avoid the need for binding, which means that the operating sash of the window is in line with the frame, which ensures that it opens and closes properly. A window that isn't plumb could begin to open and close without difficulty, or it could get warped over time, creating problems for the seal and the appearance of the window.
When you purchase replacement windows made of upvc hinges, be aware that they can be bought in either imperial or the metric sizes. The sizes that are metric tend to be slightly more precise, but this isn't really noticeable when they are installed. The first corner fixing holes on the track and arm are a standard size, however the other holes could differ in length based on the hardware that was originally used. You should measure the holes in your frame prior to purchasing it to ensure that the hinges made of upvc you buy are the right dimensions.
Crank
Normal wear and tear over time can result in damage to the window handle, lock, or crank mechanism. This could affect the ease of opening and closing your windows and also compromise their security. If your window is difficult to open or close, or if you hear a clicking sound when turning the handle it could indicate you should replace the mechanism. If you're not able to lock your window, or the multipoint lock is damaged it might be worthwhile to consider replacing this component of the hardware, too.
It's simple to replace the window crank with little effort. But, it's essential to purchase the right size replacement. Make sure that the replacement has the same height as the old one that can be established by measuring the distance between the crank arm guide bushing and the notch in the track running across the bottom of the window frame. You can also measure the spindle length on the handle you currently have to determine the size of the replacement.
The kind of window handle that you have will determine which kind of crank mechanism is required for your casement or awning windows. Espag handles are equipped with a mental spindle in the back that is fixed to the frame of the window and controls the mechanism. Cockspur handles come with pegs that are fixed in place by three or even four screws that are fitted into the sash and frame.
Once you've found the appropriate replacement, it's easy to fit. First, take off any trim mounting screws on the window's casement cover and carefully lift it off to reveal the window operator innards (Photo 1). Compare the new lever to the old one and take off any trim screws that have rusted. Screw the replacement to the window frame. Replace any screws that have become rusted or bent. Then, place the casement cover over the mechanism.
