How to Replace Door Handles
Door handles are an essential part of the decor of your home. A new handle can bring your home's decor modern.
Over time, your door knobs may become stiff or even break. These are signs it's time to change the knobs. This guide will help you choose the correct door handle replacement for your home.
Door Knobs
Door handles can enhance the aesthetics of your home while also making it easier for people to open and close doors. They are available in a variety of colors, finishes, and types to complement your decor. If yours is beginning to show signs or need an upgrade it is possible to replace them in a few simple steps.
You must locate the shaft, or spindle through which the knob is inserted to the door. Some knobs have a small opening that you can use a screwdriver for removal of the set screws that hold the handle in place. Some have a small slot or hole that you can use to press an activated detent pin that is spring-activated using a flathead. When you press this pin, the latch mechanism releases and allows you to pull or push the knob.
After you have ahold of the shaft or spindle, take the knob off of the door and replace it with the new one. Check that the latch is working properly before tightening the set screws.
After replacing the knob, you can place the rod for the latch into the hole on the door. Interlock it with the rod system on the second knob. Make sure upvc replacement door handles are aligned, then thread in the screws on the latch plate and tighten them.
Some people prefer a smooth or brushed metal finish for their door hardware to give their home a sleek and contemporary appearance. This will match the furniture they have. Some people prefer a rustic style that goes well with farmhouse-styled rooms. If you have one of your family members who has mobility issues, you might want to choose an rim or lever lock, which requires less pressure to operate.
Other factors are being looked at more and more when it comes to the design of door handles. Infection control and accessibility are key considerations when it comes to developing new designs for handles. For instance, some can be operated with an arm.
Latch
The latch that keeps your door handle open is prone to wear and tear due to the wear and tear of use. It is easy to change the latch on your door handle. This will result in a big difference in how it opens and closes.
Depending on what type of handle you use the latch may be a separate part or a component of the knob. In any case, you'll follow the same procedure to remove and replace. The process of removing the old latch of the way is relatively simple, especially if your door handle has what's known as a "magic button". The button is located on the left side of the knob, this small pressure-slot is what you have to press to pop the latch out of the handle and out of the latching mechanism.
If your handle doesn't have this button the first step is to remove any cover plates that rest over the latch plate. These are usually rectangular or circular and can be removed by using a screwdriver to pull them off the handle. Some have a tiny slot in them where you can insert your screwdriver into, while others simply snap off.
Then, loosen the machine screws that hold the latch and the plate to the door handle. These are the shorter screws with a pointy tip and you'll have to store them in a safe place to reuse them in later steps. Once these are off you can pull the latch plate and mechanism out of the hole in the door and place it in a safe place.
You can now begin working on the new latch. Insert the inside plate of the latch into the hole in the door and secure it with the provided hardware. Make sure the square pin that is on the interior of the latch is facing the latching mechanism inside the handle and that it lines up with the other screw chambers in the door handle. Then, push the outside latch plate onto and secure it with the provided screws.
Strike Plate
One of the most common reasons to replace the door handle is that it feels loose or doesn't lock properly. This is usually due to misaligned components in the latching mechanism, for example a strike plate that's too small or shifted upwards or downwards on the doorjamb over time. This easy project allows you to replace your old strike plate with a new, longer one that will give you better security and keep your door closed.
Apply a lipstick or another marking material on the latch bolt to determine if it's the strike plate. Close the door and try to latch it. If the mark is lower than the strike plate's hole, it means that the plate is too small and the door will not latch. If the mark is higher or below the strikeplate hole the strikeplate has likely been moved up or downward on the doorjamb.
Depending on your door, you may be able to simply screw the new strike plate into the door over the old one with the screws that come with it. However, you may need to drill holes prior to drilling and then chisel a bit of the wood to make sure it's a good fit. If this is the situation, be careful to not chisel out too much wood or you may ruin the integrity of the doorjamb.
Installing a brand new box-style strike plate will give the lock a more secure grip on the doors and will require more force to open them. It usually requires two longer screws to secure the strike plate to the door frame. To do this, you'll have to remove the existing strike plate, then drill and chisel the wood to create space for the new one.
This hard-to find strike plate is made of solid brass and comes with a heavy-duty thickness. It's designed to be used on antique rim locks. This kit comes with wood screws as well as machine screws so you can select the appropriate hardware for your requirements. Be aware that wood screws have a sharp edge, whereas the machine screws are more blunt.
