Anxiety Treatment Medications
Psychotherapy and medication can aid those suffering from anxiety disorders. Medications used to treat anxiety include benzodiazepines, such as Xanax (alprazolam), Klonopin (clonazepam) and Valium (diazepam).
Antidepressants are also used to treat anxiety. SSRIs like fluoxetine and citalopram help by stopping nerve cells in the brain from absorbing serotonin. This chemical affects mood.
Benzodiazepines
Benzodiazepines are powerful medications for treating anxiety. They work quickly. They can also be physically addictive and pose serious risks to your safety if you use them for prolonged periods. For this reason, they should always be prescribed and administered under the supervision of a doctor. They can be useful as an "as needed" treatment for panic attacks or other extreme anxiety episodes. Benzos are usually employed in conjunction with other medications such as antidepressants or psychotherapy (talk therapy), as part of a comprehensive treatment for anxiety disorders.
Benzos are very effective at short-term anxiety treatment, and they can help you get the best night's sleep. However they can be harmful when abused, and they are not suitable for use in conjunction with other drugs. When benzodiazepines are combined with sedatives such as alcohol and opioid pain medications the risk of death or overdose is increased. They can also interact with antidepressants, causing serious and life-threatening withdrawal symptoms.
If prescribed by a physician When prescribed by a doctor, benzodiazepines are safe and effective at treating anxiety disorders. A lot of doctors are cautious when prescribing them due to the fact that they can cause addiction and adverse side effects, including memory loss. Long-term use of these drugs can cause severe withdrawal symptoms, and those who become dependent are usually unable to stop taking them without suffering severe side effects such as depression and seizures. The most important thing to remember when using benzos for long-term use is to prescribe them only to patients who may benefit from them; use them in situations in which they are likely to improve anxiety symptoms; stay away from prolonged use or abrupt discontinuation; limit the chance of abuse, particularly among children; and pair them with effective psychological therapies.
Anxiety medications, including benzodiazepines can help alleviate anxiety by blocking certain nerve signals and stopping them from being activated in the brain. These drugs can aid in sleeping better and feel less anxious, but they won't solve the root cause of what makes you anxious (like increasing bills or an unhealthy relationship).
There are some natural ways to ease your anxiety, such as exercise, meditation and yoga. Other treatments include cognitive behavioral therapy, which teaches you to confront your irrational fears and worries.
Antidepressants
SSRIs also known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are a good choice for people suffering from anxiety, as they help the brain regulate mood. However, they could take four to six weeks or longer to start working. If a person does not feel better during the time frame it is recommended to talk to their doctor about changing medications.
Antidepressants such as mirtazapine or nefazodone are also effective in treating anxiety. They can work faster than older medications, such as venlafaxine or XR. It's important to remember that these medications may cause severe reactions in certain people. If they experience this reaction you should seek immediate medical attention or call healthdirect at 1800 022 222 to speak with a registered nurse (known as NURSE-ON CALL in Victoria).
Monoamine Oxase Inhibitors, also known as MAOIs, are another kind of antidepressant used to treat anxiety. They block enzymes that break chemical in the brain down to noradrenaline, among others. This causes the levels of these chemicals to increase which has a positive effect on mood. MAOIs are typically reserved for patients who do not respond to other antidepressants, but they can be effective in treating anxiety.
Tricyclic antidepressants are amongst most effective antidepressants that treat anxiety. These drugs treat mental and anxiety disorders in a way similar to SSRIs, but with fewer adverse effects. These medicines start with a low dose and their effectiveness increases as dose is increased. Tricyclics can be effective in treating panic disorder, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder however, they are not likely to treat generalized anxiety disorder.
Buspirone, a newer antidepressant is also used to combat anxiety. It is a mild tranquilizer that doesn't have the same negative side effects as benzodiazepines. It does not affect coordination or memory. It works by increasing serotonin in the brain, and reducing dopamine. About 70% of those who try the drug find it to be effective. When the medication is used longer, the risk of side effects to diminish. Talk therapy, for instance cognitive behavioral therapy or exposure therapy, can be utilized alongside these medications to improve the effect.
Buspirone
Buspirone is used to treat anxiety disorders. It is taken orally, generally twice a day. It is not a controlled drug, but there is a potential for abuse.
Doctors aren't certain of the exact way buspirone works, but believe that it reduces the levels of serotonin and its actions in certain areas of the brain. This makes the nervous systems less sensitive to anxiety and stress.
In general, doctors believe that buspirone is to be a safe medication for the majority of people. It is generally thought to be less harmful and has a lower risk of addiction than benzodiazepines or barbiturates. Like other drugs they can cause adverse effects. The most common ones are dizziness and nausea. It is important to inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements and other ingredients you're taking before starting buspirone, since it can interact with them.
If you are over 65, your doctor might give you a lower dose of buspirone. This is because older people tend to react to drugs differently than younger people do. This is especially true for drugs that affect the nervous system.
Tell your doctor if any of these drugs are being taken by you. meds that treat anxiety includes isocarboxazid selegiline, phenelzine, linezolid, Emsam, Zelapar, and tranylcypromine. Buspirone may increase the amount of these drugs within your body, which can lead to serious adverse side adverse effects.
You should also let your doctor know if you suffer from kidney illness, stomach issues or are breastfeeding or pregnant. In these situations, certain medicines, like SSRIs might not be appropriate for you.
If buspirone doesn't work or you are unable to take it because of an illness or interaction with a different medication Your doctor may prescribe an alternative method of treatment for your anxiety. It could be a brand new kind of antidepressant like Lexapro, Prozac, a beta-blocker such as propranolol, or a benzodiazepine, such as Xanax. The PIL will provide more information about the best way to make use of the drug as well as possible side effects.
Other Medicines
There are other treatments available to help ease anxiety. Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, is one of the options. Psychotherapy can help you change the way you think about anxiety and teach you strategies for coping to manage it. Other options include learning relaxation skills as well as maintaining a regular exercise routine, and abstaining from using alcohol and other drugs. Some people get relief from anxiety symptoms by taking herbal medicines. If these alternatives don't work, talk to your doctor.
Medications used as an anxiety treatment generally fall into two broad categories: antidepressants and benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines, such as Ativan, or lorazepam, enhance the activity of GABA in your brain, which promotes tranquility. They can provide quick relief, however they can be addictive if used long-term. Antidepressants take longer to work but they help regulate the levels in your brain of specific chemicals called neurotransmitters that affect your mood.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs are the most common type of antidepressant for anxiety. They increase the amount of serotonin, a chemical signalling agent in your brain. This can boost your mood and cause you to feel less anxious. Another class of antidepressants is serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, or SNRIs, stop the reabsorption of both serotonin and norepinephrine in your brain, increasing levels of these chemicals, making you feel more energized. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are an additional class of antidepressants that is often prescribed by people who don't respond to SSRIs to treat anxiety.
There are a myriad of other medications sometimes used to treat anxiety, including azapirones (such as buspirone) alpha- and beta-blockers, antihistamines (such as hydroxyzine), and Clonidine. Most of these have lower success rates than SSRIs and benzodiazepines.
While medication is an effective treatment for anxiety, it shouldn't always be employed. If you have a root reason for your anxiety, such as debt, a poor diet, or a problematic relationship, non-medicative treatments could be more efficient. Other options include cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), biofeedback (which helps you to regulate your brain's activity using a monitoring device), and mindfulness meditation.
