Are You Responsible For An Remote Key Repair Budget? 10 Ways To Waste Your Money
How to Fix a Key Fob That isn't Working

If your key fob does not work, you can fix it by following a few simple steps. First, check to make sure it's not the backup remote.

If the backup can lock and unlock your car doors, then there is likely an issue with the primary remote. The most frequent causes of key malfunctions for car remotes are issues with the circuitry or battery.

Battery

It is not unusual for the battery inside a car key fob to wear out. It is simple to replace the battery. However it is crucial that you use the correct type. You can consult your owner's guide or contact the manufacturer to inquire about the correct type. It is also essential to inspect the battery compartment, since batteries that are not working properly can release toxic chemicals that could damage the remote. If replacing the battery does not solve the issue, there may be other issues requiring professional attention. If the buttons are damaged or stuck for instance it could be necessary to disassemble the remote and rework each component. You can also try reprogramming the vehicle to recognize the new device.

Buttons

Through repeated use, key fobs may wear out and become dirty. car remote key repair is not uncommon for buttons to cease working, or to require a long press to make them work. This can be extremely frustrating especially if you're out of town and need to start your vehicle. Even worn-out or malfunctioning buttons are often fixable with a little effort and materials you already have at home.

First, make sure that the batteries are correctly placed and that the indentation at the back of the button has been filled. Open the remote carefully and look over the circuit board. Examine for signs of rust or other signs that the buttons are worn out or damaged, like missing the conductive paint. Use a Q-tip dipped in alcohol, gently clean any membrane contacts that are worn or where conductive paint is missing. Don't rub too hard, as this could erode the conductive paint and stop the button from firing when pressed.

Check the battery connector terminals carefully for any loose solder connections. Soldering them back to their original position will allow the button to function again If this is the case. You can apply the same process to restore functionality to any other loose connection inside the fob.

If any of the rubber buttons located at the front of the keyfob are not functioning or require to be pressing extremely hard, the graphite disks at the back of the button may have worn out and require replacement. You can usually do this by rubbing a pen over the disks. This should bring the button to life.

If none of these solutions work, or if you still not be able to get the button respond when you press it hard, it is possible that the circuitry is failing. It is possible to fix this by cleaning and re-soldering your fob, but you should have an extra in case it does not work.

Circuitry

If the keys fob buttons are functioning, the circuit board inside the remote could be dirty. A thorough inspection is usually enough to fix this problem. Broken cases and water are the most frequent causes of boards that are dirty. A broken case allows water and other debris to pass through and short circuit the electronics. Water can also damage pins and vias, which are tiny connectors found on the board.

If you're skilled enough to open your key fob and don't mind making some mess, we can remove the buttons from their sockets and solder in new ones. Also, you should check the connections between battery terminals. If they're loose, the buttons might not work or even become stuck in their down position. Soldering the terminals back to their proper positions is usually enough to restore a non-working fob to a working condition.

Non-Remote Transponder Chips

The non-remote chips that are sealed are more durable than remote fobs. However, they are susceptible to breaking in the event of a hole being drilled into them or in the event that a door handle of a car or lawnmowers is pushed over them. Most of the time non-remote transponder chips fail, and this can be blamed on an exploded fuse.

If you're not confident opening the key fob, you can remove the circuitboard and use a multimeter to determine if the diode is operating properly. If you're not comfortable with this, you can go to your local Oreilly or hardware store and test their RF frequency tester. This will inform you whether the key fob sends signals.

Programming

Key fobs endure lots of abuse and aren't impervious to damage. They can lose their pairing to the receiver in your car because of shock or a low battery, which requires them to be reprogrammed. A professional auto locksmith or dealer can reprogram your key fob and get it working again. If, in the unlikely event that resetting and fixing your key fob isn't working, it could be time to replace it all over again.
