The film follows their rise, fall and supreme demise as they battle for control of the underworld gambling mecca of Las Vegas. It also examines the corrupting influence of money and energy on each males.

In a movie that brims with wit and violence, Ace and Nicky's rivalry is what ultimately brings them down. Nicky is so ruthless that he begins to upset the delicate balance of mob insider politics that Las Vegas was constructed upon. As a result, his presence causes a sequence of chain reactions that finally result in the demise of both himself and Sam.
