The Diplomat (Netflix) Review
Keri Russell stars in this political drama about a career diplomat who is thrust into a high-profile job she neither wants nor believes she's suited for. She's a longtime servant in the war-torn corners of the globe, but when her president asks her to hop on a plane to London, it's for an assignment that has tectonic implications for her marriage and political future. The Diplomat, created by former West Wing writer-producer Debora Cahn, hits Netflix on April 20.

After a hostile attack on a British aircraft carrier, seasoned diplomat Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) is sent to the UK to take charge of the crisis. Her new gig is far more formal than she expected, and her relationship with her husband Hal (Russell's real-life spouse) is put to the test as they work to untangle the conflict. It seems Iran and Russia are both to blame, but with a hostage situation threatening to spiral out of control, Kate must act fast to prevent war.

It's a heady premise, and one that isn't too far-fetched. According to the show's creator, Cahn was inspired to create this project after witnessing the firsthand machinations of the diplomatic corps in action during her work on The West Wing and Homeland. It's a world that's not well-portrayed on television, which makes this a welcome addition.

The cast also includes Stuart Hayford as the deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy in London, a savvy right-hand man who is able to nudge Kate in the diplomatic directions needed. There's also Eidra Park as the CIA station chief in London and Dana Haqjoo as Farid Namazi, Iranian Ambassador to the UK. Rounding out the embassy staff is a group of characters including the brash Deputy Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (Rory Kinnear), who is eager to help Kate wrangle the situation and the fiery Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Nana Mensah).

Despite a rocky start, the cast proves that it can handle the political drama, and The Diplomat is likely to be a successful new entry into the Netflix library. It's a great showcase for the talented Russell, who has earned countless awards and nominations for her performances in The Americans, Felicity and Orange Is the New Black. With a solid supporting cast and compelling storytelling, it's a definite must-see for political buffs.
