The Menu Movie (DVD) Review movie
The new the menu movie from Searchlight Pictures takes a savage chunk out of our tradition of chef worship. It’s a dark horror movie with edge-of-your-seat suspense that explores the dynamics of diners and cooks. But the true thrill comes from the greatest way that the movie skewers our hubris with scalpel-sharp satire.

Chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) is a self-professed “artist” who creates absurd culinary experiences for an elite clientele. He invites a younger couple, Tyler and Margot (Nicholas Hoult and Anya Taylor-Joy), along with a quantity of different wealthy patrons, to his private island for an unique dinner expertise that includes an array of more and more pretentious dishes.

Slowik’s ruthless employees is skilled to perform more like a military unit than restaurant staff. They pipe gel, tweeze microgreens, and say things like “Yes, Chef!” and “I love you, Chef!” on command. This is a kitchen with a psychopath at the wheel, and each guest will really feel like an unwilling participant in an experiment of psychological and physical degradation.

During the primary course, an assemblage of sea crops and rocks coated in “barely frozen filtered sea water,” overly enthusiastic foodie Tyler gasps with admiration as his date, Margot, rolls her eyes. It may be a bit too bloody for some viewers, but it’s a satisfying horror-comedy that hits all the right notes. It’s a Grand Guignol satire of the dichotomy between the takers and the givers, and it will not swimsuit everyone’s palate. But for many who enjoy it, the dish is delicious.
