How to Get a Private Adult ADHD Assessment
Getting diagnosed with ADHD can be a challenge particularly for adults. Many healthcare professionals are not familiar with ADHD symptoms in adults, or might have limited diagnostic tools to work with.
Self-assessment may give some clues, but a definitive diagnosis can only be made by a qualified professional. This includes clinical psychologists, physicians (psychiatrist or neurologist) and medical social workers.

The primary method of diagnosing ADHD is through an organized interview and questionnaires. They are usually built on research that compares the behavior of people suffering from ADHD to those of people without it. During the assessment, it is important that the person be honest and forthcoming and not hold back information or conceal any issues they may be facing. The clinician will inquire about the presence and severity of symptoms throughout time and in different situations. They will also discuss family history, any other mental problems or alcohol or drug abuse.
A psychiatrist will examine the symptoms and their impact on everyday functioning. This is a more detailed assessment than a typical mental health evaluation, which is why it's important to make an appointment ahead of time. Bring a trusted family member or friend to offer support and feedback. Sometimes an additional neuropsychological, psychosocial or testing for learning disabilities is used to complement the clinical assessment and help determine whether ADHD is present or whether other conditions are causing the symptoms.
The clinician will tell the patient what to do next following the assessment. They will usually discuss the appropriateness of medication and come up with a comprehensive treatment plan. Some clinics offer rapid titration services for those who wish to begin taking medication immediately. This service is usually only available to a limited number of patients who meet certain criteria, such as being over 18 and not suffering from a medical condition that prevents them from starting treatment immediately (e.g. hyperthyroidism or symptomatic cardiovascular disease).
How do I book an Assessment Private?
