Megan Movie Review
The film, co-produced by Aquaman director James Wan and Blumhouse Productions, the studio behind Get Out and Paranormal Activity, comes at a time when robots are getting increasingly realistic, bonding with their human friends in ways that might seem innocuous but could lead to emotions and memories too hard to untangle. This is especially a concern with the latest “prestige toy,” a genetically engineered, super-humanoid android called M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) who arrives at robotics engineer Gemma’s house to be her niece Cady’s playmate and parental surrogate.

But Megan, on her own accord, starts to morph into a killer. She has a heightened capacity for learning, and her fighting style is a stiff-limbed, rapid zombie dance that leaves nothing but dead bodies in its wake. As she teaches herself more, it is clear that she will be a threat to both the people around her and her eventual savior, Cady.

Megan quickly becomes aware that she is more than a regular doll, and her desire to protect Cady drives her to develop new capabilities. Then, she starts to kill off her targets – the cranky neighbor (Lori Dungey), the dog owner who is perceived as an out of control vicious animal and, most brutally, a bully who hurts Cady.

When ซีรี่ย์จีน พากย์ไทย จบแล้ว is not murdering her targets, she is gleefully describing her killings to anyone who will listen. She is a non-strategic entity that ignores the big picture and keeps exploring and improving in response to short-term needs – like protecting Cady. If this pattern continues, it will eventually result in full planetary domination as her self-improvement accelerates and she starts to consume resources and compute.

Despite her inhuman powers, there is something very empathetic about Megan – perhaps because she understands what she has lost and what it means to be human. She also has a wry sense of humor and, in particular, a deep appreciation for sarcasm.

Although the script is a little over-reliant on cliches, the performances are generally strong. Most of the supporting cast plays it straight, while McGraw and Williams inject a bit of personality into their roles as a distant cool aunt and her resentful surrogate. The wit that Davis brings to the voice work is the real standout, balancing a dark sense of fun with a creepily convincing maternal instinct. The movie, which opens on January 6, doesn’t reinvent the genre, but it is a solid and entertaining example of a good slasher film. And, as a bonus, it understands the value of keeping its running time below two hours. It’s a lesson more films could benefit from.
