A Vibrant Rant About Remote Key Repair
How to Fix a Key Fob That isn't Working

If your key fob won't work and you're not sure why, you can fix it with just a few steps. First, make sure that it's not the backup remote.

If the backup can lock and unlock your car doors then there's a likely issue with the primary remote. Most car remote key failures result from battery or circuitry problems.

Battery

The battery inside a key fob can wear out over time. It is fairly easy to change out a battery, although it is important to ensure that you select the correct one that you can refer to your owner's manual, or contact the manufacturer's dealer to find out the kind of battery you require. It is also crucial to check the battery compartment, since dead batteries can leak toxic chemicals that could damage the remote. If changing the battery doesn't fix the issue, there may be other issues that require professional attention. For instance, if the buttons seem to be stuck or broken, it may be necessary to disassemble the remote and rework its components. You can also try reprogramming the vehicle to recognize the new key fob.

Buttons

Through repeated use, key fobs can get dirty and worn. This is not unusual, but it can cause buttons to stop functioning or require a difficult press to get them to function. This can be a huge hassle particularly if you're away from home and you need to start your vehicle. Even malfunctioning or worn-out buttons can be fixed with a little time and materials you already have at home.

First, check that the batteries are properly charged and that the indentation on the back of the button is filled. Then, carefully remove the remote and examine the circuit board. Look for signs of rust or other signs the buttons are damaged or worn out. For example, conductive paint may be missing. Use a Q-tip that has been dipped in rubbing alcohol to gently clean any membrane contact that is worn out or where conductive paint is missing. Do not rub too vigorously in order to damage the conductive paint and stop the button from firing when it is pressed.

Also, carefully check the battery connector's terminals for any loose solder connections. If this is the case, simply reconnecting them may bring back function to the button. The same method can be used to restore functionality to any other loose connections within the fob.

If, for instance, any of the buttons made of rubber on the front of the key fob stop working or require a difficult press to function it is likely that the graphite disks that are on the back of the button are deteriorating and require replacement. This can be done by rubbing a pencil on the disks, which should bring the button back to life.

If none of these solutions work, or if you still are unable to get the button to respond when you press it hard, it is possible that the circuitry is failing. It is possible to fix this by cleaning and re-soldering the fob, but you should have another spare in case it does not work.

Circuitry

The circuit board of your remote control may be dirty, regardless of whether the buttons on the key fob work or not. A thorough examination is usually enough to fix this issue. Water and broken cases are the most common causes of boards that are dirty. A damaged case allows water and other debris to enter and short out the electronics. Water can also eat away at pins and connectors on the board, which are known as via's.

If you're able to open your key fob and aren't afraid of making a mess, we can remove the buttons from their sockets and solder in new ones. It's also worth looking at the battery terminal connections. If they are loose, the buttons may not function properly or become stuck in their down position. Soldering the terminals and button's back in place is usually all that's needed to return the key fob that is not working to working condition.

Non-Remote Transponder Chips

Sealed non-remote transponder chip are more durable than the remote fobs that contain them but they can be damaged by a hole that is drilled into them or run over by a lawnmower or car door handle. Failures of the fuse are typically to blame for non-remote chips failures.

If you are not comfortable opening the key fob, remove the circuitboard and utilize a multimeter to determine if the diode is working properly. If you don't feel comfortable with this, you can go to your local Oreilly or hardware store and test their RF frequency tester. This will let you know whether the key fob transmits a signal.

Programming

Key fobs are not indestructible and are susceptible to damage through a variety of causes. browse around this website may lose their connection to the receiver in your car due to shock or low battery, which calls for them to be reprogrammed. A professional auto locksmith, or main dealer can reprogram the keyfob and get it working again. If resetting or repairing your key fob fails, you may need to replace it.
