Split Movie Review - A Review of M Night Shyamalan's "Split" carefully
The depravity that lies beneath the floor of society's carefully cultivated veneer has been a present to screenwriters, from Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" to Brian De Palma's "Dressed to Kill." With "Split," M. Night Shyamalan treats dissociative identification disorder not as a twist, but as the very premise on which this wickedly compelling abduction thriller is built. And while it is typically lurid and even a bit icky, it is also absorbing, sometimes slyly funny, and in the end makes for one of the clever surprises of this or any other year on the films.


The movie's greatest power is James McAvoy's mesmerizing performance, or performances. It's not simply that he switches from one persona to the following; it is how seamlessly and convincingly he does so. As a result, his characters remain believable and scary quite than cartoonish caricatures. And although his portrayal is often hammy, it never feels gratuitous or exploitive.

There are those who would argue that this movie is offensive to victims of mental sickness, but that view misses the point entirely. And whereas it will not be a definitive installment in his Unified Cinematic Universe, it does clarify that Shyamalan isn't but finished together with his intelligent twists. The big question, in fact, is whether he can now sustain this momentum for the relaxation of his profession. I actually hope so, because he has much more methods up his sleeve.
