The Super Mario Movie Review
The Super Mario Movie, the second big-screen adaptation of Nintendo's iconic video game franchise, delivers on the promise of a colorful, fun and entertaining movie for the whole family. The film follows Mario and Luigi, Toad, Donkey Kong and the rest of the colorful cast of Nintendo characters fighting off Bowser's army in the Mushroom Kingdom. The movie features a mix of cute comedy, fast-paced action and eye-popping visuals. But that's pretty much all it has to offer.

The story isn't exactly deep, and it doesn't try to be. The filmmakers are aware of the limitations of their source material and focus on what they know will appeal to kids: bright animation, competent voice acting, and a steady dose of nostalgia porn. It isn't a perfect movie, but it's well worth your time, especially if you're a fan of the franchise.

When a plumbing fiasco Narnia-slaps them into another world, Luigi ends up in the Mushroom Kingdom, ruled by Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and menaced by the nefarious Bowser (Jack Black).


In an effort to appeal to as many people as possible, the filmmakers sacrifice character and narrative logic. They give Mario a whole family of stereotypical Italian stereotypes to make him seem more appealing to kids, and they keep the story moving by neglecting any attempts at deeper characterization. Mario, for example, doesn't really learn anything from his adventures and ends the film as the same clumsy hero he started out as.

Despite these flaws, the movie manages to stay fun and entertaining with its fast-paced pace, quality dialogue and competent voice acting. The animation is beautiful and faithful to the franchise, and the music is great, with a nice cinematic once-over. It's the kind of movie that adults and kids alike will enjoy, although I don't think it has enough depth for adults to be truly engaged.

The biggest disappointment is the way it completely miscasts Charlie Day, who gives a solid performance as Luigi. However, the filmmakers completely forget that his character is a singer, and they never give him a chance to showcase his talents. They even rob him of the opportunity to duet with Jack Black as Bowser, and that's a crime against humanity. It's too bad because Day is one of the best actors working today, and his character deserves better. I'm not saying that the producers should have avoided a dystopian sci-fi fantasy, but they should have adapted it to the Super Mario universe instead of trying to shoehorn it into a generic and unremarkable movie.
