How to Fix a Key Fob That isn't Working
If your key fob isn't functioning, a few easy steps can be taken to fix it. The first step is to be sure that it's not the backup remote.
If the backup remote is able to lock and unlock your car doors then there is likely an issue with the primary remote. The most frequent causes of key problems with your car remote are issues with the circuitry or battery.
Battery
It is not uncommon to find a battery on a car key fob to degrade. It is simple to replace batteries. However, it is important to select the right kind. You can consult your owner's guide or contact the manufacturer to find out the right type. It's recommended to inspect the battery compartment carefully because dead batteries can leak harmful chemicals that can harm the remote. If changing the batteries does not solve the issue it could be that there are other issues that require professional attention. If the buttons are damaged or stuck for instance it might be necessary to take the remote apart and rework each component. It is also possible to reprogramme the vehicle to recognize the new fob.
Buttons
Key fobs may become dirty and worn out from frequent use. It is not uncommon for buttons to stop functioning, or require a hefty press to get them working. This can be extremely frustrating, especially if you are away from home and you need to start your car. Even malfunctioning or worn-out buttons can be fixed with a bit of time and tools you already have at home.
First, check that the batteries are properly placed and that the indentation on the back of the button has been filled. Then, carefully remove the remote and look at the circuit board. Look for signs of rust or other indications that the buttons have been worn or damaged. For instance, conductive paint may be missing. Use a Q-tip that has been dipped in rubbing alcohol to gently clean any membrane contact that has become worn out or has conductive paint missing. Avoid rubbing too hard, since this could cause damage to the conductive paint and block the button from firing when the button is pressed.
Check the battery connector terminals for loose solder connections. If this is the case, simply connecting them back could restore functionality to the button. The same method can be used to restore functionality to any other loose connections within the fob.
In the end, if any of the buttons made of rubber that are on the front of the key fob have stopped working or require a very difficult press to function it is likely the graphite disks at the back of the button are wearing out and need to be replaced. This can usually be done by rubbing a pencil on the disks, which should bring the button back to life.
If none of this is helpful or if the button still does not respond to a hard push It could be the case that the circuit board is damaged. It is possible to fix this issue by cleaning and re-soldering the fob however, you should have a spare in case it does not work.
Circuitry
If the key fob buttons are working the circuit board in your remote may be dirty. A very thorough inspection will usually resolve this issue. repair car key of dirty circuit boards is water and damaged cases. A broken case can allow water and other debris into the circuit board, which can cause it to short out. Water can also eat away at pins and small connectors on the board, referred to as via's.
If you are handy enough to open your key fob and don't mind making some mess, we can take the buttons out of their sockets and then solder new ones. It's also worth examining the battery terminal connections. They can become very dirty and if they're loose the buttons may not work or even stay in their down position. Soldering the terminals and buttons back in their place is generally all that's needed to return a non-working key fob to functioning condition.
Non-Remote transponder chips
The sealed non-remote chips are more durable than their remote fobs, however they can be cracked when a hole is made in them, or in the event that a door handle of a car or lawnmowers plows over them. Most of the time, non-remote transponder chips fail, and this could be attributed to an exploded fuse.
If you're able to open up a key fob that is sealed and can tolerate the mess, you can remove the circuit board and examine the fuse using a multimeter to ensure that it is functioning as intended. function. If you're not confident doing this, head to your local hardware store or Oreilly's, and they usually have an RFID frequency tester that can tell you whether the key fob is sending a signal.
Programming
Key fobs aren't impervious to destruction and are susceptible to being damaged by a lot of things. They can break their connection with the receiver in your vehicle because of shocks or a low battery, which calls for changing the program. A professional auto locksmith, or the main dealer, can reprogram your key fob and get it back working again. In the rarer case that resetting and fixing your key fob isn't working it may be time to replace it completely.
