Information About Cinnamomum
If you've ever handled a cinnamon stick, you've had a peek at the dried bark of a cinnamon (Cinnamomum spp.) plant. Hundreds of species within the Cinnamomum genus are native to tropical and subtropical regions. They vary somewhat in appearance, with some being tall trees and others growing as a smaller shrub. Uncooked cinnamon rollsCinnamon bark is used as a spice.
In November of the same year, after having secured Malacca and learning of Banda's location, Albuquerque sent an expedition of three ships led by his friend António de Abreu to find it. Malay pilots guided them via Java, the Lesser Sundas, and Ambon to the Banda Islands, arriving in early 1512. An early account of Banda is in Suma Oriental, a book written by the Portuguese apothecary Tomé Pires, based in Malacca from 1512 to 1515. Full control of this trade by the Portuguese was not possible, and they remained participants without a foothold in the islands. Map of the Banda IslandsThe earliest evidence of use of nutmeg comes in the form of 3,500-year-old potsherd residues from the island of Pulau Ai, one of the Banda Islands in eastern Indonesia.

Sri Lanka, and much of South Asia in fact, is littered with mature cinnamon trees, growing as would an elm or maple in North America. Of course the sight of a 50- year-old cinnamon tree is interesting to me, but it was almost an eyesore where does cinnamon come from video to the locals. This plant is beyond commercial use, even for its leaves, which are now too bitter to eat . Cinnamomum verum, also called true cinnamon or Ceylon cinnamon, is a more expensive and difficult to find cinnamon variety.
Is my shaggy, crumbly, cigar-like cinnamon sticks the same as what you have written about? I thought I knew the difference, and now I feel that I’m back to step 1. The health benefits of cinnamon have been known for a while, which is what makes it a great substitute for other, less healthy sweeteners as well as a real food itself.

Ceylon cinnamon sticks have many thin layers and can easily be made into powder using a coffee or spice grinder, whereas cassia sticks are much harder. Indonesian cinnamon is often sold in neat quills made up of one thick layer, capable of damaging a spice or coffee grinder. Saigon cinnamon (C. loureiroi) and Chinese cinnamon (C. cassia) are always sold as broken pieces of thick bark, as the bark is not supple enough to be rolled into quills. The 1600s, it turns out, were banner years for cinnamon.
They only become noticeable if you’re taking cinnamon therapeutically in really large quantities. Not only is the harvest date marked on each box, but each individual cinnamon stick is wrapped separately preserve it’s freshness and flavor. They’ve just taken delivery of the Summer harvest in Vietnam so their stock is really fresh. Cinnamon that undergoes industrial processing usually has a somewhat bittersweet taste, and the fullness of flavors real cinnamon offers is absent. If you use real, freshly ground cinnamon, you’ll never experience it again.
Myristicin—a monoamine oxidase inhibitor and psychoactive substance—can cause convulsions, palpitations, nausea, eventual dehydration, and generalized body pain when consumed in large amounts. Nutmeg may interact with anxiolytic drugs, produce allergic reactions, cause contact dermatitis, and evoke acute episodes of psychosis. This narrative may have to do with the issue that one has to grate to obtain the spice powder, not crack a nutmeg, and this may not have been widely known by some purchasers of the product. From these locations they were transplanted to their other colonial holdings elsewhere, notably Zanzibar and Grenada. The national flag of Grenada, adopted in 1974, shows a stylised split-open nutmeg fruit.

But I would have rather waited than have them send me old cinnamon. I felt guilty thinking they are probably a small company so I didn’t want to send it back or complain. In modern times, growing poppy seeds is a difficult business for American farmers, due to the risk of heroin production. Other countries have fewer difficulties with permitting the growth of poppies for the seeds alone, which have very low levels of opium alkaloids, such as morphine. As other countries began imitating the American muffin, the occasional use of poppy seeds to flavor them spread as well. Because of this, all poppyseed pastries place the person who consumes them prior to a test at a high risk of being inaccurately considered a drug user. In traditional European cuisine, nutmeg and mace are used especially in potato and spinach dishes and in processed meat products; they are also used in soups, sauces, and baked goods.

The outer bark is carefully stripped away, revealing the inner bark, which is used to make cinnamon. The tree continues to grow, and after a few years, it can be harvested again. This cycle can continue for several decades, making cinnamon production an environmentally friendly and sustainable industry. The inner bark of the cinnamon tree is rich in essential oils and compounds that give cinnamon its distinctive flavor and aroma.
Cinnamon is frequently used in popular breakfast and dessert dishes. You can use cinnamon sugar for extra sweetness, cinnamon sticks for evenly spicing liquids, and roasted cinnamon for an extra punch of cinnamon flavor. Flavor simple syrup with cinnamon sticks to use in cocktails, iced tea and lemonade. Bring a cup each of sugar and water, plus two cinnamon sticks to the boil over medium heat. Use this to sweeten any beverage—or pour into a mason jar, tie with ribbon and gift it as a sweet, homemade treat from the kitchen.
Cuttings are often slow to form roots and might not be ready to plant outdoors for several months. When planting cinnamon outdoors, choose a location that provides enough room for the mature size of the species. Make sure the planting site is several feet away from other trees and shrubs so that your plant will receive enough sunlight.
They will curl into the typical shape you see in cinnamon sticks. Store your cinnamon in a sealed container in a cool, dry place, and it should keep for a couple of years. You can harvest your cinnamon two to three years after planting and then every two years after that. Cut off individual branches, or cut the entire tree at the trunk. (Trees growing in the ground often produce new shoots that will become a new tree.) Scrape away the outer bark until you see the yellowish-orange layer beneath, which reveals the edible part of the plant.
