The Resident Evil franchise holds the Guinness World Record for Most Adaptations of a Video Game, with eight mainline games, seven live-action films and countless spinoffs and animated TV shows. But none of them has lived up to the games, which are known for their mix of scares, suspense, and body horror. That's why Netflix's new adaptation is a breath of fresh air, despite its flaws.
While the show's first season largely lives up to its title and follows the survivors of Raccoon City's catastrophic chemical disaster, it also tries to be a deeper exploration of the nature of power and human control. But the series is often weighed down by its devotion to the weird, tampered-with canon that established it. It's a testament to the cast that this isn't always a total loss, but it's still hard to recommend the series.
Netflix's newest take on the popular video game franchise has been canceled after only one season, a month after it premiered. The company announced the news on Friday, citing poor ratings. The series, which was the first of its kind to be canceled by Netflix, starred Lance Reddick as the show's main character, Albert Wesker, who is one of Umbrella's most powerful executives.
The Netflix series is a two-timeline story that spans 14 years, following an adult Jade Wesker (Ella Balinska) on her search for a cure after a deadly pathogen was unleashed in the fictional midwestern town of Raccoon City and then destroyed in a cover-up by the powerful pharmaceutical corporation Umbrella. The second timeline follows Billie and her half-twin sister, Jade, as they try to escape from the grips of the evil Umbrella corporation and save the world.
Both stories are exciting, but the show is most on-brand when it's following the older Jade. The story doesn't shy away from revealing the dark, twisted side of her father and the Umbrella corporation. ดูหนังออนไลน์ doesn't forget to include the terrifying mutants that are a staple of the franchise, and there are some truly grotesque scenes to be found here.
While the pacing is uneven and there are some wildly off-putting elements, the cast of characters in the Netflix version of the world of Resident Evil is excellent. In particular, Reddick delivers a compelling performance as Wesker that captures the cold, subtle villainy of the series' most famous antagonist.
While it doesn't quite live up to the standards of the games, the first season of Resident Evil on Netflix is worth a look for casual fans looking for some zombie-slaying action and a chance to explore the world of the games' most prominent villains. But the show is also unfocused and tedious, and it's weighed down by its commitment to the games' tampered-with canon instead of building its own interesting story. Ultimately, the series is an interesting failure.
