Why Window Repair Is Necessary
A pebble thrown by a lawnmowers or a heavy drink that is set on your glass-topped coffee table are some of the many things that can cause cracks in glass windows. A damaged window could allow wind, rain bugs and other harmful elements to infiltrate your home.
There are methods to repair a cracked glass and stop it from spreading.
Water Damage
Water seeping through the window frame is an indication that you need to replace it. The moisture could damage the wood in your window frame and cause the frame to rot. It can also reduce the energy efficiency of your window. A reputable window company will replace your windows, without compromising the structural integrity of your current frames.
Wood rot can impact the inside and outside of your windows. If your wood windows have rotting spots it is possible in the event that the rot isn't advanced. However, if the rot has spread to your mullions or muntins (the parts of the frame of your window that hold the glass panes) they might need to be replaced. This can cost more than a new set of windows.
Another issue that is often required for replacement is a faulty seal between your double-paned windows. This could be caused by condensation or debris between your double-paned windows, or an indication that the insulation inside your window has failed. Modern windows have insulation built in. This means that they won't have the same issues as older multi-paned windows.
A cracked, loose, rotting, or missing the casing around your window is unattractive and can lead to other problems. A damaged casing does not mean it's time to replace your windows, though. You may be able to sand it and then repaint it to enhance its appearance, depending on the condition and surrounding wood.
If your exterior casing is in bad shape it is possible to apply a new coat of weather-resistant paint to prevent moisture from causing damage to the window. Installing new exterior casing can be a beautiful and practical improvement to your home.
Paint chipped or peeling
Window frames and sills are typically close to the elements, which means they can take a lot abuse from sunlight and precipitation. Moisture is the primary reason for the peeling of paint around windows, particularly when the wood is exposed. Water seeps through the wood and when it evaporates, the pressure beneath the film of paint causes the paint to peel. The moisture may be from condensation on the interior or from rain and snow on the exterior. It is essential to sand and scrape the surface when you notice the paint start to chip. Some meticulous painters apply a water-repellent preservative, or thinned boiled linseed oil to the wood before painting to reduce the penetration of moisture and allow the paint to hold better.
If paint starts to crack, it's time to consider repairing your window. To remove any paint that has strayed, place a dropcloth or tarp over the area before applying a fresh coat. Using a utility knife, carefully remove any loose paint. Be careful not to cut the wood beneath or cut through the sheathing. Clean the area thoroughly and allow it to dry completely.
Once the surface is dry, sand the area again with a fine sanding pad. This will prepare the surface for primer and create a base that is ready for paint. If you're working with lead-based paints ensure you're using the proper safety equipment. Clean the sanded surface and tape off any other surfaces, such as baseboards, to protect them from paint.
Then, prime and paint as directed on the specific paint tin you're using. Make sure to adhere to the curing and temperature guidelines for the paint, as these will vary according to the type of paint. Paint the exterior using exterior-grade paint and the interior with interior-grade paint.
Repairing peeling or chipped painted frames is a less expensive alternative to replacing frames. If your window frames can't be repaired, it could be worth upgrading to newer energy efficient windows.
Glass that has cracked
A broken window can leave your home vulnerable to wind and rain, as well as bugs. If the break or crack isn't severe enough you can fix it yourself. It's recommended to address small cracks as soon they occur, before they become worse as time passes or temperature changes.
While there are numerous methods to make damaged glass invisible however, this is not a good task for a DIY. A small crack can create a weak spot in the window, which can result in further cracks and a more expensive replacement. The best solution is to cover the crack with plastic. It covers it from the outside and blocks moisture or air from seeping through, which could damage the frame or seals around the windows.
Put on your safety glasses and gloves prior to taking the broken glass out of the frame. You'll need an utility knife, scraper or chisel for removing any old glazing points that pin the pane in place. It is also recommended to use the knife to pry out any wood that is unfinished and then clean and seal the area with linseed oil or a clear wood sealer.
You can then make use of epoxy to stick the glass back into place. This option is the most time-consuming however it will give your glass a more solid appearance. If you're using epoxy, opt for the double-cylinder model that distributes the resin and hardener in equal proportion. This allows you to determine exactly how much applied to the glass which ensures a strong seal.
If Home have double- or triple-pane windows be sure that the gas fills remain intact when resetting the glass. These gases are essential for insulating your home and keeping heat in during winter and out in the summer. If you take the window off the gasses escape and cause it to reduce its energy efficiency. You can replace gas fills using the same method as for repairing cracks on other kinds of glass.
