How to Fix a Key Fob That isn't Working
If your key fob won't work then you can fix it with some simple steps. The first step is to make sure that it's not your backup remote.
If g28carkeys cannot lock and unlock the doors of your car, then it is most likely that the primary remote is not working. The most frequent causes of key problems with your car remote are circuitry or battery issues.
Battery
It is not uncommon to find a battery on the key fob for cars to wear out. It is easy to replace the battery. However it is essential that you use the correct kind. You can check your owner's manual or call the manufacturer to determine the right kind. It's also a good idea to inspect the battery compartment with care, as dead batteries sometimes leak harmful chemicals that can damage the remote. If changing the battery doesn't fix the issue, there may be other issues that require professional attention. If the buttons are damaged or stuck for instance it could be necessary to disassemble the remote and rework each component. You can also try reprogramming your car to recognize the new key fob.
Buttons
Key fobs can become filthy and worn out due to frequent use. This is not unusual, but it can cause buttons to cease functioning or require a hard press for them to work. This can be a hassle particularly when you're away from your home and need to switch on your car. Fortunately, even worn out or malfunctioning buttons can often be fixed with just a bit of time and some of the materials you may already have around the house.
First, make sure the batteries are charged correctly and that the indentation on the back of the button is filled. Then, open the remote with care and inspect the circuit board. Examine for signs of rust or other indications that the buttons are worn or damaged, such as missing the conductive paint. Then, using a Q-tip dipped in alcohol to gently clean any membrane contacts that are worn or have conductive paint missing. Don't rub too hard, as this could erode the conductive paint and prevent the button from firing when you press it.
Examine the battery connector's terminals for loose solder connections. Soldering them back to their original position will restore the button's functionality If this is the situation. The same process can be used to restore function to any other loose connections inside the fob.
In the end, if any of the rubber buttons on the front of the key fob stop working or require a difficult press to function, it is likely that the graphite disks at the back of the button are deteriorating and require replacement. This can be done by rubbing a pencil over the disks, which should bring the button back to working.
If none of these solutions work or you are unable to get the button to respond when you press it hard, it could be that the circuitry is failing. It is possible to fix this issue by cleaning and re-soldering the fob, but you should have another spare in case it does not work.
Circuitry
The circuit board inside your remote control may be dirty regardless of whether the buttons on the key fob function or not. A thorough examination is usually enough to fix this issue. Broken cases and water are the most frequent causes of dirty boards. A damaged case could allow water and other debris to enter the circuit board, which can cause it to short. Water can also eat away at pins and connectors on the board, referred to as via's.
If you're skilled enough to open your key fob and don't mind making a mess, we can remove the buttons from their sockets and then solder new ones. Also, you should check the connections between battery terminals. They can become very dirty and if they're loose, the buttons might not function or may even remain in their down position. Soldering terminals and buttons back to their original positions is often enough to return a malfunctioning fob to working.
Non-Remote transponder chips
Sealed non-remote transponder chip are more durable than remote fobs that contain them but they can still be cracked by a hole drilled into them or run over by a lawnmower or car door handle. The majority of non-remote transponder chip failures could be attributed to a blown fuse.
If you are not comfortable opening the key fob, you can remove the circuitboard and utilize a multimeter to check that the diode is functioning correctly. If you're not confident doing this, head to your local hardware store or the Oreilly's and they will usually have an RFID frequency tester that can determine whether the key fob is sending a signal.
Programming
Key fobs are subject to lots of abuse and aren't impervious to damage. They can lose their pairing to the receiver in your car due to shock or low battery, which requires the reprogramming. A professional auto locksmith, or a dealer in the main, can reprogram your keyfob and get it functioning again. In the event that resetting and repairing your key fob isn't working it may be time to replace it all over again.
