Babylon (Movie Review)
Filmmaker Damien Chazelle, who planted a sloppy kiss on Hollywood with the maudlin La La Land, returns six years later with brash Babylon, his poison pen elegy for Tinseltown's ribald silent era. The movie is a tour de force of excess, an unrelenting parade of coke-fuelled orgies and on-set meltdowns. Its protagonists are not the usual suspects: None come from wealth, and all aspire to transcend their station.


The story centers on Manny Torres (Diego Calva), a sweet-hearted Mexican fixer who dreams of leaving his mark on an industry he considers bigger than life itself. Until then, he'll continue to do the fringe work of the trade, like wrangling elephants or transporting a circus act to a hedonistic soiree. His boss, Jack Conrad (Brad Pitt) is the real deal, an established star whose fame comes with a hefty price tag.

While the fictional characters are drawn from historical figures, most of the movie's supporting players are based on contemporary artists and behind-the-scenes workers in the industry. Jovan Adepo's trumpet-playing Sidney Palmer is likely a composite of more famous performers like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, but also less-recognized Los Angeles-based musicians. Jovan's character's use of burned cork to darken his skin to fit racist stereotypes is informed by the real-life practice of many jazz greats during this era.

In addition to the movie's ebullient tone and lush production values, Babylon is also distinguished by its performances. Pitt and Robbie are a formidable team, and their chemistry is electrifying onscreen. Pitt, who won the Oscar for best actor in 2015 for his portrayal of the legendary actor John Gilbert, is particularly impressive in this role.

While ดูหนังออนไลน์ 4k may be playing a caricature of an established celebrity, he makes the character seem completely authentic and vulnerable. And Robbie's performance as a hard-drinking actress with a soft spot for her naive idol is remarkable for its honesty and nuance.

For a while, it seems as though Babylon is about to turn into a fetish movie, and then the narrative shifts gears again, becoming an ode to a golden age of filmmaking. It's a bracing experience, one that proves even at its most obnoxious, the glitz and glamour of Hollywood still has something to offer us.
