Anti-bacterial
Hemp oil has an incredibly antibacterial effect and can be used as a reliable substitute for chemicals in food packaging. Hemp polymer composites that are incorporated have been proven to inhibit the growth of Salmonella enteritidis, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli (Gomez-Estaca et al., 2009). Clove essential oils are also effective in stopping the spoilage of food products by pathogenic microorganisms.
Inhibitory properties of hemp and other natural fibre plants are interesting because they can protect against spoilage by microbial. To explore this further, both refined hemp seed oil and unrefined hemp were screened for their antibacterial activity by using the disk diffusion method against a selection of microorganisms. Unrefined oil demonstrated weak antibacterial activity, with zones of inhibition ranging from 0.3 to 3.0 mm. Refined hemp oil however it showed moderate to high antibacterial activity.
The antibacterial properties of emulsions containing hemp seed oil and non-ionic surfactants were examined. Dynamic light scattering was employed to determine the initial particle size of emulsions and their distribution of size using a Zetasizer nano ZS instrument made by Malvern Instruments. The polydispersity index (PDI) was also measured.
A HLB value between 8-9 was the most effective emulsion stabilization. The size of the droplets increased as HLB values increased and decreased when there was a decrease in the amount of surfactants.
Furthermore, it was found that the emulsions had moderate to strong antibacterial activity when mixed with non-ionic surfactants. The enhanced activity did not extend to gram negative bacteria such as E. coli. The results suggest that the antibacterial properties of emulsions made with hempseed oil are mainly attributed to its content of unsaturated fatty acids, especially the linoleic acid and the -linolenic acid.
