A Heartbeat
Tears of joy roll down the couple’s cheeks as they leave the doctor’s office. They had just heard the heartbeat of their first child. That day marks the start of a new life, a new human being on the Earth. This couple just experienced God’s power in action. It takes miracles to make a baby, not just any miracles, but God’s miracles. Psalm 127:3 states, “Children are a blessing, and a gift from the Lord.” They have a potential to be like Albert Einstein, or a gold medal-winning Olympic athlete. Children can also have disabilities that can try to restrain them from doing what they want to do. Parents need to encourage and support their children to follow their dreams and not let disabilities hold them back.

There is a family in my neighborhood who just adopted a little girl from China. This five year old girl is physically disabled. My neighbors, the Capps, opened their hearts to Yezi, even though she wasn't perfect. They don't give her much extra attention, she gets the same amount as her siblings. She might not be a professional athlete, but there is still opportunities for her to shine!


The disability that Yezi has is spine bifida. Has no feeling from her knees down. She



When my neighbors, the Capps, went to bring Yezi home, she was mad. She was confused and angry because all she knew was the foster family she lived with who loved her. She didn’t want to leave; she belonged in China. To Yezi, the whole leaving thing was terrible and scary.

I got to meet Yezi on Back to School night a couple months after she was adopted, and have gotten to spend a lot of time with her since. She is happy and is adapting to her life here wonderfully. She amazes me with a new talent or ability each day. She is super smart, beautiful, and more. She now has flower braces for her legs and she is walking all over the place. She even tries to jump off things!

When I look at Yezi I think about how she lived all those years with barely anything and how brave she has had to be. She tackles challenges, works hard, and doesn’t give up. She makes me want to do everything with one-hundred percent effort and try my hardest. Being part of her life has made me be more thankful for all my blessings.

With parental love and guidance children can do anything. When the parent gives them that support and guidance, a child feels like they can do anything. They need to feel the love of their parents and family who always have their back. Remember that day when you heard that first heartbeat, the heartbeat of God’s amazing creation. The child who can be anything, do everything, even though they are not perfect.
