Patriarchal values are often significant in perpetuating their ideals in texts. This is showcased in Shakespeare's Taming Of The Shrew where the Bard dictates the values of patriarchy through the dominance of characters such as Petruchio and the suitors. Men dictate the insignificant role of women through characters such as Katherina who has to eventually give in to her husband's will. The use of "devils" as a metaphor in "From all such devils, good Lord deliver us!" by Hortensio compares Katherine to a devil due to her disobedient and erratic behaviour. This symbolises her arrogant and defiant nature. This also serves as a biblical allusion assigning blame to Eve for the downfall of mankind thus, positioning women as universally disobedient. Shakespeare juxtaposes Katherine's rebellion as a shrew early in the play with her obedience as a dutiful wife later on to reinforce the importance of patriarchy. Contrastingly, the use of the tricolon in "To wound thy lord, thy king, the governor" emphasises the ownership men have over women when they are married and how important they are in a woman's life, and this showcases the transformation of Katherine from being a disobedient and defiant woman to a woman who pays a lot of respect to the role of men and is grateful to them.
The use of the simile in "A woman moved is like a fountain troubled" establishes the need for patriarchal values to keep emotional women in line. Emotional women are likened to a fountain being troubled when it is defective and water is dirty so no one would want to drink from it, to emphasize the patriarchal preference for non-emotional obedient women that would attract men like an orderly fountain drawing thirsty men. Therefore, patriarchal values are often significant in perpetuating their ideals in texts like Taming of the Shrew.
