8 Tips For Boosting Your Repair Window Game
When It's Time to Repair Windows

It is important to be cautious when fixing your windows. First, put on a pair of cut-resistant gloves and safety goggles to prevent shards of glass from cutting you during your work.

Placing a plastic cover over the crack is a simple fix for a damaged window. This will keep insects, snow and rain from entering your home.

Cracked glass

Glass that is cracked not only make your home appear less appealing however, it could let drafts and other elements into the home. It doesn't matter if cracks result from an impact, like soccer or a baseball or stress, such as the sudden temperature change, but it is essential to have them repaired as soon as you can in order to prevent further damage and to keep your windows functioning effectively.

Use clear tape to cover your damaged window if it's not damaged. This is a quick, low-cost solution to protect your window from water, dust bugs and other debris. It also shields your windows from the elements.

If the crack is getting bigger or is deep, it is advised to speak with a professional. A professional glazier can identify the cause of a crack and recommend the most effective repair method.

Impact cracks are the most frequent window breakage. They typically occur when a sharp object hits your window with enough force that it breaks. These cracks are usually accompanied by a starburst pattern of lines, and shattered pieces that can be quite risky if they break loose. The crack could compromise the gas in the panes of your double-pane window and lower its energy efficiency.

Stress cracks are a different kind of crack that develops over time due to extreme temperature fluctuations and other environmental factors. These cracks begin around the edges of your window and can eventually enlarge into full-blown breaks.

A pressure crack is a more severe crack however it can be repaired. This is most often an arc of curvy lines that extends across one or more sides of your window. It could be a result of high or low air pressure, which could cause expansion or contraction of the glass.

If you're looking to take further than tape and nail polish, there are several alternatives to fix cracks in your window glass. Glass Repair Film, while more expensive, will give your windows more protection and durability. If you'd prefer to go the DIY option, epoxy is a strong adhesive that can fill in cracks to help prevent further damage and make your window appear like it did not have cracks in the first place!

Leaking Windows

If you notice a damp area under your window, or the wood around it is soft or rotting it could be time to replace your windows. Mildew and mold thrive in excessive moisture and can cause various issues within your home. They can affect the quality of indoor air, lead to sagging drywall and even worsen allergy symptoms. If left unchecked they could cause structural damage to the home.

It is recommended to contact an expert if water is visible or leaking from the outside. Leaking windows are among the main causes of mold and structural damage and should not be left untreated.

In many instances, caulking can be used to stop leaks. Before applying the new caulking, it's necessary clean the area and get rid of any caulking that is in place.

Check the weepholes on the frame for any debris. These holes are designed to drain rainwater, but they can also become blocked over time by insect carcasses or other debris.

Examine the seal between the double-paned window and the frame made of metal. This will ensure an airtight seal between the glass panes and help make the windows more efficient. The seal may wear away over time, however, and let water enter the home.

Water stains on the ceiling and walls are another indication of a leak. The drywall becomes discolored when it is saturated with water. Peeling paint is another sign of water affecting the adhesive properties of the paint, and pulling it away from the wall.

Faux Muntins & Mullions

In the past, muntins and mullions (or glazing bars in the UK) separated and held glass panes in the classic multi-pane windows. Since the larger expanses of glass that were tempered became available after WWII, they fell out of fashion. Today, they're only used as a decorative element in some older homes.

Most of the time just a small or a single group of these wooden supports could be damaged by wind or rain and cause cracks to the window. The good thing is that you are able to repair most of these rotting or brittle components.

First employ a rag to clean the affected areas. Use window repair -based cleaners that doesn't leave any residue. Remove any loose or rotting parts and use an exacta-knife cut the intersections between the horizontal and vertical painted window muntins. After trimming the intersections then, use painter's masking tape to tape off the lower part of the window frame. Then, you can apply a thick coat of white paint, paying special focus on the areas which were lightly coated on the first coat. Allow the paint to dry completely before removing the tape and applying a second coat.

If you're experiencing an issue that is more serious such as cracks that form an hourglass shape in middle of the window it's likely to be better to replace the sash. In such cases you'll have to search for a replacement that is similar to the existing window in both style and size.

Installing grid windows is a less expensive option. These windows come with a complete pane of glass with a series of muntins glued to the surface which gives them a split appearance. They're not as energy efficient as traditional windows, however.

Installing a drip cap will stop water from entering the window frame. The majority of home centers sell aluminum drip cap options for about $20. These are much easier to install than replacement windows sashes and provide the same functions as a genuine mullion, or muntin.

Broken Sashes & Frames

A broken window sash should be a signal that you need to contact a professional. If left unchecked the broken sash may cause water leaks, wood rot and more serious problems with the frame and sill. If you've got a damaged window sash, replace it as soon as you can to ensure that your window is properly sealed and operating.

Often, the issue is caused by worn out or poorly installed cords for sash. Luckily, replacing them is fairly easy and is possible in all double-hung windows. To begin, you'll need to remove the tabs made of metal that secure the sash. To do this, you need to push up on one side (it isn't important which) of the sash and then pull it towards the opposite side to take it from the window frame. It is important to remove the strip of separation that is what separates the sash from other to allow access to the location where the sash cords are located.

It's important that you check the metal tabs on the old sash with the new one. If they're different it can be difficult to put the new one in its slot and impact how the sash operates. Fortunately, this can be easily corrected by simply placing tabs in the correct places on your new window.

In addition to the sashes, you'll need to check your window frame for any damage or decay. It's a good idea perform this inspection regularly since the wood shrinks and gets worn down over time, especially with exposure to the elements. You should repair any visible damage as soon as you can to avoid a more serious issue.

If your window frames are in bad condition, you'll need to treat them with a homemade preservative created by mixing half mineral spirits with half boiling the linseed oil. After the treatment has dried for a total of two days, you are able to re-finish your frames using high-quality latex paint. A new coat of paint can aid in protecting your window from the elements, too.
