The sash is an internal frame that is able to move up and down vertically in windows that open. This article will show you how to make several simple repairs to sash.

Weather Stripping

Wooden window sashes can give a classic look to your home. They are also sturdy and last for a long time when they are maintained properly. Sash Hardware

The hardware that holds the window sashes may wear out over time and with use. This can result in windows or doors that is difficult to open or close. It's a good idea to know that replacing and repair of this hardware is typically easy and affordable. If you are having trouble opening the sash, spray some oil into the jamb channel. Then, slide the sash open to see if it resolves the issue. If the problem persists it's most likely that the sash balance is off. You will need to take off the window sash to get access to this part of the hardware.

Ideally, window sashes should be able to open and close without effort, but this is difficult if the weights become worn or if the sash that joins rail isn't properly coated. This problem can be caused by a variety of reasons, such as insufficient maintenance or a mismatched weight rating for a particular sash.

If the hinge arms of a window begin to lose their elasticity, this could cause the sash's to drag and eventually strike the frame in the corner in the opposite direction of the hinge arm (Photo 1). To make these sash repairs it is important to have all the necessary tools in place before you begin. Start by marking the location of the hinge channel on the frame using pencil (Photo 1). This will help you get the channel back in place correctly when you're finished. Then, remove the sash and remove the hardware including the beads that separate (Photo 2) and the cords or chains which hold it in place. Soften any putty that has been hardened with an electric heat gun set to medium and equipped with a shield to block the nozzle. Remove the old sash, and place it in a labelled bag.

Sash Weights

If your window sash repairs are to replace a broken cord or just to keep the windows functional and functional, replacing worn-out weights on sash can improve sash operation and help reduce energy consumption.
