A new study has found that older patients have a poor prognosis when they have a heart attack. The study looked at 1500 patients over the age of 80. Almost a third of these patients died within a year.
Using sophisticated statistical techniques, the researchers considered a number of factors when calculating the prognosis. Medications were also analyzed. Those who took three medications were 26 percent less likely to die than those who took only one.
Personal Medical alarm Researchers noted that cardiovascular changes associated with aging make diagnosis and treatment more complicated. These include stiffer and larger arteries, which increase the risk of a blockage. Another contributing factor is long-standing hypertension.
In addition, patients who underwent invasive treatment had higher survival rates. Some of the treatments included coronary stenting and bypass surgery. Patients who didn't get invasive treatment had a survival rate of 55 percent. However, they had a higher chance of dying after five years.
One of the best treatments for a heart attack is an angiogram, which is a test that is used to visualize the blood vessels. This is done by inserting a small tube through the patient's arm. An angiogram allows the doctor to see if the patient has blockages in the arteries.
Because of the risk of a second heart attack, caregivers should pay attention to medical directives. They should keep track of the patient's needs and help them with physical activities such as bathing and going to the bathroom.
