A basic Tom and Jerry cartoon is a traditional instance of comic book storytelling. The two mice have an virtually mystical relationship, with Tom being quick-tempered and cussed and his rival, Jerry, being unbiased and robust for his size. In the tip, they are a match made in heaven and each is determined to succeed at their own level, but generally the characters cross a line and turn into enemies. Tom's loyalties to Jerry are undying, and he never fails to make his presence felt.

Similarly, in 1956's Blue Cat Blues, Jerry narrates the movie with a voiceover, similar to Charles Boyer.
