How to Repair a Broken Window
Whether from a bad storm or a ball thrown by your children's neighbors, broken window glass is not something to be ignored. It could lead to further issues, such as water leakage or a draft which increases the cost of energy.
Depending on the extent of the crack, there are a variety of options to fix it. Here are a few options to think about:
Tape
A good old-fashioned piece tape is a great temporary solution to cracks that have formed in windows. It's simple to use, affordable, and works quite well. Make sure you cover both sides of the crack to ensure that it is as secure as possible. This will help to reduce air from getting in, which can lead to further damage to the glass and shatters inside the window. Clear tape is an excellent alternative since it looks better than duct tape, and doesn't leave a sticky residue after you take it off.
There is also a special adhesive tape specifically designed for the repair of damaged window screens and is available at most hardware stores. It comes in two 30-foot lengths, and creates an invisible patch. This stops the crack or tear spreading. This is suitable for windows for boat enclosures as well as RV or tent vinyl window and soft top car windows. It is simple to use and requires no specialized tools or skills. Just cut the correct size, remove the release paper, and apply it. It is resistant to UV and saltwater and made from a durable material which is able to withstand harsh environments. You'll save a lot of money by not having to replace the entire window.
Super Glue
Super glue to repair your glass is a quick fix for small cracks and chips in glass. These adhesives join with hydroxyl ions present on the glass's surface, creating a strong grip in seconds. Cyanoacrylate glues can also be used for gluing metal, wood and ceramic to glass as they can withstand moisture and high temperatures. If you're working with a large project, however, it's worth investing in silicone or epoxy for greater hold and speedier drying time.
Before applying any kind of glue to a damaged window it is essential to prepare the surface. You'll want to remove any debris that may be present and ensure that both surfaces are clean and dry. It is also an excellent idea to roughen the surface, particularly if it's extremely smooth. A little sanding can give the adhesive more surface that it can adhere to, which results in a better bond.
When you're ready to begin the actual repairs, it's important to select a good glue specifically designed for glass. This will ensure that the glue is safe and won't leave undesirable marks or fingerprints. If you can, opt for an adhesive that is clear, and is transparent after it has dried. Avoid glues that expand when they dry, as this could cause cracked glass.
You should also consider the way in which the glass is to be used. If it will be kept indoors and won't be exposed to a lot of stress, then a basic super glue is sufficient. In contrast, if the glass is to be part of a windshield it's best to choose an adhesive that is weatherproof.
Super glues can cure in a variety. It's important to read the directions carefully because some require chemical accelerators to speed up the drying process. It's also a good idea to work in a well-ventilated location and open any windows to increase air circulation, since this will allow the glue to dry more quickly. You can also use a fan to increase the flow of air around your work area. This will allow the glue to dry faster.

Paint
When painting windows, it is important to do an excellent job. This will make the appearance of the paint more appealing and will allow it to adhere better. Before starting, make sure that the window is clean and scraped to get rid of any paint or wood that are sagging or decayed. It is also essential to remove all hardware like handles and latches. You will also want to sand down the surface that you intend to paint. This will result in a surface that is smooth so that the primer and paint will join.
It is essential to shield the surrounding areas of the window with plastic sheeting and painters tape. This will stop paint from getting onto areas that are not supposed to be painted. Green frog tape is ideal for this because it creates an uncluttered line that is easy to remove. Painters tape is a great idea for any delicate edges that are adjacent to the wall surfaces.
After the window has been protected it's time to begin the actual painting. You'll need to apply several coats of primer, and let each one dry before moving onto the next. After you've finished primer, it's an excellent idea to give the entire surface a light sanding with some fine-grit Sandpaper. This will help to make the surface smooth for the next coat of paint. It will also help to remove dust that has accumulated.
You'll have to wait until primers made of oil or acrylic paints have dried completely before you can begin painting. Depending on the brand of paint you are using, this process can take up to 24 hours.
When the primer and paint are dry, it's now time to paint. Paint the rails (horizontals first) before painting the stiles (verticals). This will help keep drips of paint from getting onto the glass. Keep a moist cloth on hand to wipe off any drips of paint promptly.
