How to Fix a Key Fob That isn't Working

If your key fob isn't functioning There are a few simple steps that can be taken to fix it. First, check to make sure it's not your backup remote.

If your backup remote cannot lock and unlock the doors of your vehicle, it is most likely that the primary remote isn't working. The most common causes of key malfunctions for car remotes are issues with the circuitry or battery.

Battery

The battery in the key fob may get worn out over the course of time. It is simple to replace a battery. However, it is important that you choose the right kind. You can check the owner's manual or contact the manufacturer to find out the correct type. It is also essential to check the battery compartment, since dead batteries can leak caustic chemicals which can damage the remote. If changing the battery doesn't solve the issue there could be other issues that require attention from a professional. If buttons are stuck or broken for instance, it may be necessary remove the remote and rebuild each component. You can also try reprogramming the vehicle to recognize the new remote.

Buttons

From frequent use, key fobs can get dirty and worn. It is not common for buttons to cease working, or to require a hard push to make them work. This can be extremely frustrating, especially if you are away from home and need to start your car. Even worn-out or malfunctioning buttons can be fixed with a bit of time and tools you already have at home.

First, ensure that the batteries are charged correctly and that the indentation on the back of the button is filled. Then, carefully remove the remote and look at the circuit board. Examine for signs of rust or other indications that the buttons are worn or damaged, like missing paint that is conductive. Use a Q-tip that has been dipped in alcohol to gently clean any membrane contact that has become worn-out or has conductive paint missing. Do not rub too vigorously as this can damage the conductive paint and stop the button from firing when you press it.

Check the battery connector terminals carefully for any loose solder connections. If this is the case, reconnecting them may restore function to the button. You can apply the same procedure to restore functionality to any other loose connection inside the fob.

Finally, if any of the buttons made of rubber that are on the front of the key fob aren't functioning or require a difficult press to function it is likely that the graphite disks on the back of the button are wearing out and need to be replaced. You can usually do this by rubbing a pen over the disks. This should bring the button back to life.

If none of these solutions work, or if you still not be able to get the button respond when pressed hard, it is possible that the circuitry is failing. This can be fixed by a quick clean and re-soldering, but it is ideal to have a spare fob in case this method fails for you.

Circuitry

The circuit board inside your remote control may be dirty, regardless of whether the buttons on the key fob are working or not. A thorough examination is often enough to resolve this problem. Water and broken cases are the most frequent causes of dirty boards. A damaged case can let water and other debris into the circuit board, which can cause it to short. Water can also damage pins and vias, which are the tiny connectors that are found on the board.

If you're able to open your key fob and don't mind making a mess, we can take the buttons out of their sockets and then solder new ones. It's also worth checking the connections between battery terminals. If they are loose, the buttons may not function or get stuck in their down position. Soldering the terminals, and putting the button back in place is usually all that's required to return a non-working key fob to working condition.

Non-Remote transponder chips

Sealed non-remote transponder chips are much more durable than remote fobs they are contained in, however they are still susceptible to being damaged by a hole that is that is drilled into them or over by a lawnmower or door handle for a car. The failure of the fuse is usually to blame for non-remote chips failures.

If you're not confident opening the key fob, remove the circuitboard and use a multimeter to check that the diode is functioning properly. If you're not comfortable with this, visit your local Oreilly or hardware store and use their RF frequency tester. This will tell you whether the key fob is sending signals.

Programming

Key fobs aren't indestructible and are susceptible to being damaged through a variety of causes. They may lose their connection to the receiver in your car due to shock or low battery, which calls for them to be reprogrammed. www.g28carkeys.co.uk/car-key-repairs-near-me/ or dealer will be able to reprogram your key fob and get it functioning again. In the event that resetting or repairing your key fob doesn't work it could be the time to replace it all over again.
