Responsible For The Remote Key Repair Budget? 12 Tips On How To Spend Your Money
How to Fix key car repair That isn't Working

If your key fob doesn't work then you can fix it by following a few simple steps. First, make sure that it's not your backup remote.

If the backup remote is able to lock and unlock your car doors, then there is likely an issue with the main remote. Most car remote key failures result from battery or circuitry problems.

Battery

It is not uncommon for the battery in a key fob for cars to degrade. It is easy to replace a battery. However, it is important to select the right kind. You can check your owner's manual or call the manufacturer to find out the correct type. It's also a good idea to examine the battery compartment thoroughly, as dead batteries sometimes leak caustic chemicals that can harm the remote. If replacing the battery does not solve the issue there could be other issues that require professional attention. If buttons are damaged or stuck, for example it could be necessary to remove the remote and rebuild each component. You could also try reprogramming the vehicle to recognize the new key fob.

Buttons

From frequent use, key fobs could wear out and become dirty. It is not common to have buttons stop working, or to require a hefty press to make them work. This can be frustrating especially when you're away from home and need to switch on your car. Fortunately, even worn out or damaged buttons can be fixed with a little time and a few materials you may already have around the house.

First, check that the batteries are properly charged and that the indentation on the back of the button is filled. Then, carefully open the remote and inspect the circuit board. Check for evidence of rust, or other signs the buttons are damaged or worn. For example the paint that conducts electricity could be missing. Use a Q-tip that has been dipped in alcohol to gently clean any membrane contact that has become worn-out or where conductive paint is missing. Avoid rubbing too hard because this could damage the conductive paint and block the button from firing when pressed.

Also, make sure to inspect the battery connector's terminals to ensure any loose solder connections. If this is the case, reconnecting them could restore functionality to the button. You can follow the same process to restore functionality to any other loose connection within the fob.

If any of the rubber buttons located at the front of the keyfob isn't functioning or require to be pressing very hard the graphite disks at the back of the button could have worn out and will require replacement. You can do this by rubbing a pen across the disks. This should bring the button to life.

If none of these solutions work or you are unable to get the button to respond when you press it hard, it is possible that the circuitry is failing. It is possible to fix this by cleaning and re-soldering your fob however, you should have an extra in case it does not work.

Circuitry

The circuit board of your remote control may be dirty regardless of whether the buttons on the key fob function or not. This problem can be resolved through a thorough examination. Water and broken cases are the most frequent causes of boards that are dirty. A damaged case can allow water and other debris to pass through and short out the electronic components. Water can also damage pins and vias, which are small connectors that are found on the board.

If you're handy enough to open up your key fob, and you're not afraid of making a mess, we can de-solder the buttons and solder new ones in their place. Also, it's worth checking the connections between battery terminals. They can become very dirty and if they're loose, the buttons might not work or even stick in their down position. Soldering the terminals back to their original positions is often enough to bring a non-working fob to working.

Non-Remote Transponder Chips

The sealed non-remote chips are more durable than their remote fobs, however they can be cracked if a hole is drilled into them or in the event that a door handle of a car or lawnmowers plows over them. Fuse failures are usually to blame for non-remote chip failures.

If you're not confident opening the key fob, remove the circuitboard and utilize a multimeter to check that the diode is functioning properly. If you're not comfortable with this, you can visit your local Oreilly or hardware store and use their RF frequency tester. This will let you know whether the key fob transmits signals.

Programming

Key fobs aren't indestructible and are susceptible to being damaged by a lot of things. They can lose their pairing with the receiver in your vehicle because of shocks or a low battery, requiring the reprogramming. A professional auto locksmith or a main dealer can reprogram your key fob and get it working again. If resetting or replacing the keyfob is not working it may be necessary to replace it.
