Car Key Button Repair
Car key buttons undergo many abuses particularly if they are used frequently. This can lead to them becoming damaged over time.
Fortunately, there are several quick fixes to get your keys back to working. However, these methods have risks when it comes to changing batteries or tampering with your key fob. If you're not comfortable performing these yourself, it is recommended that you contact an expert auto locksmith.
Change the Battery
It's possible to change the battery in your key fob if it doesn't function as it should. You can usually find replacement batteries from any chain drug store, or the parts department of your car dealership. Some manufacturers will even include an extra key fob battery in the packaging when you purchase a car from them.
The first thing you'll have to do is determine what battery your key fob uses. This information is typically available on the site of the manufacturer or by examining the key fob. Generally, the most common battery that is used in key fobs is a button cell similar to the ones used in watches and remote controls. These batteries are available at Walgreens, Energizer and other stores for less than $5 for a pack of two.
Once you know what kind of battery your key fob is using then you can remove it and remove the old battery. You can open most key fobs using your fingers or a flat tool, like a screwdriver at the notch or seam where they join. When the fob is opened, the battery should be able to pop out and you can then insert the new one in the same orientation that the old one. A lot of key fobs are powered by CR2032 batteries. These batteries can be found at retailers that sell AAA or AA batteries.
You can join the two halves together after inserting the new battery, and then test the key fob to make sure that all buttons function properly. You can determine if everything is functioning properly by pressing the lock and unlock buttons on the key fob while pointing it toward your vehicle. If your car is not responding to the key fob, it may be necessary to reprogram the key fob to establish an electronic connection between the two. This is a fairly straightforward process that requires a phone or other device.
Reprogram your key fob
If your key fob won't work and you think it's time to replace it the fact is that it might not require a new battery, but rather the old one needs to be changed. This procedure is different for each vehicle. To learn how to do it you must consult the owner's manual. It's usually available in PDF format on the automaker's website. You can also search YouTube for videos.
Modern automobiles require a particular procedure to put the vehicle in 'programming mode,' which is usually done by pressing the power button on the driver's side door or ignition several times while pressing a button on the fob within a certain time frame. This is how the fob communicates its digital identity code to the vehicle, which stores it in the memory. Once the fob is programmed, it will behave as an ordinary key.
It is important to know that changing the programming of a key fob will erase any other key fobs that have been previously programmed. Therefore, if you want to keep other fobs, they should be carefully and quickly reprogrammed after the first one.
You can sometimes find replacement batteries for a car key fob at hardware stores, big-box retailers or even online. However, you must be aware of the make and model of your car prior to purchasing a fob battery because the correct type of battery can be difficult to locate.
A CR editor found an appropriate battery for the key fob she owned, but it was for a different car. This meant that she could start her car and open the door, but couldn't lower the windows.
Fortunately, the dealer can help in this situation in this case, since they have the tools needed to reprogram a fob for the specific vehicle. Dealers are required to perform this procedure on certain European automobiles like Audi and BMW due to their unique security features that can only be reset in the factory. Other dealers we spoke to like those at Toyota and Lexus were willing to attempt reprogramming a replacement fob as they knew the exact model and make of the vehicle you are driving.
Replace the Button
If you've tried changing the battery, or reprogramming your key fob, but still can't start your car it could be time to replace that button on the key. The button on your car key is subjected to a lot of use and jostling and can be damaged or stuck over time. Each time you press the button on your key fob a unique code is transmitted in a sequence that the vehicle's receiver is able to recognize. If you attempt to operate your vehicle from a distance without the correct code can cause it to not be able to recognize you and lock the doors or shut off the engine.
You can purchase replacement buttons online or in many local hardware stores. It is simple to install them and they are also very easy to open.
Contact an Auto Locksmith
If you're experiencing issues with the car key button It could be time to call in the experts. Auto locksmiths specialise in the repair of electronic car keys as well as their associated locks. They have the expertise and tools required to recognize and fix a range of issues that may arise with your key fob including replacing batteries and changing their programming. They have the expertise and skills to handle more complicated tasks, such as fixing a damaged key or cutting a replacement key.
One of the most frequent reasons for a car key button to stop working is because the switch inside it has worn out. Excessive use and exposure to elements are the primary causes. The switch is constructed of hard plastic and has many switches on its surface. Each switch is able to activate the function for which you are using the key. As remote key fob repair becomes harder to activate these functions. This means that you'll need to push harder on the switch to make it work. This can result in more damage to the switch, diminishing its life span.
Replace the battery in your key fob. A lot of models of cars use lithium-ion coin or button batteries that you can find in supermarkets, pharmacies, and home improvement stores. Your key fob will function after you have replaced the battery.
If the problem persists it could be because the contacts on your key fob have been worn out. The contacts are rubber-like and coated with an electric conducting film, which can wear away over time. They are exposed to the elements when you use the key which means they are constantly exposed to moisture and dirt. They'll eventually wear down to the point that they can no longer make contact with the circuit board, or sensor beneath the keypad.
You can try to have the key fob replaced at a vehicle dealership, but it can be costly and can take quite a while. Another alternative is to contact a local locksmith for your car, who will be able to repair your key fob and save you money.
