How to Fix a Key Fob That isn't Working
If your key fob does not work then you can fix it by following some simple steps. First, check to make sure it's not the backup remote.
If your backup remote is unable to lock and unlock the doors of your vehicle, it is likely that the primary remote isn't functioning. The majority of car remote key malfunctions result from circuitry or battery problems.
Battery
It is not uncommon to find a battery on the car key fob to wear out. It is easy to replace batteries. However it is crucial to select the right kind. You can check your owner's guide or contact the manufacturer to find out the right kind. It is also important to examine the battery compartment, since batteries that are not working properly can release caustic chemicals which can damage the remote. If changing the batteries doesn't solve the issue, it may be that there are other issues that require attention from a professional. If the buttons are stuck or broken, for example, it may be necessary disassemble the remote and rework each component. You can also try reprogramming the vehicle to recognize the new device.
Buttons
Due to frequent use, key fobs could get dirty and worn. It is not unusual for buttons to stop working, or to require a long press to make them work. This can be a huge hassle, especially if you are out of town and need to start your vehicle. Fortunately, even worn out or damaged buttons can be fixed with a bit of time and a few items you might already have in the home.
First, check that the batteries are charged correctly and that the indentation on the back of the button is filled. Then, carefully open up the remote and inspect the circuit board. Look for signs of rust or other indications that the buttons have been worn or damaged. For example, conductive paint may be missing. Utilizing a Q-tip that has been dipped in alcohol, gently clean any membrane contacts that have become damaged or where conductive paint is missing. Don't rub too hard as this can damage the conductive paint, and block the button from firing when it is pressed.
Examine the battery connector's terminals carefully for any loose solder connections. Soldering them back to their original position will restore the button's functionality If this is the situation. The same procedure can be used to restore function to any loose connections in the fob.
If any of the rubber buttons on the front of the keyfob are not working or require being pressing very hard the graphite disks at the back of the button may have worn out and will require replacement. You can do this by rubbing a pencil over the disks. This will bring the button back to life.
If car key repair near me of this doesn't help or if the button does not respond to a firm press, then it may be because the circuit board has gone bad. This can sometimes be repaired with a quick clean and refitting, but it's ideal to have a spare fob available in the event this method fails for you.
Circuitry
The circuit board inside your remote control could be dirty, regardless of whether the buttons on the key fob work or not. A very thorough inspection is often enough to resolve this problem. The most common causes for dirty circuit boards is water and damaged cases. A damaged case can allow water and other debris to pass through and short out the electronics. Water can also damage pins and vias, which are tiny connectors on the board.
If you're able to remove your key fob and aren't afraid of some mess, we can remove the solder from the buttons and solder new ones in their place. It's also worth checking the battery terminal connections. If they are loose, the buttons may not work or even become stuck in their down position. Soldering the terminals back to their proper positions is usually enough to return a malfunctioning fob back to working.
Non-Remote Transponder Chips
Sealed non-remote transponder chip are more durable than the remote fobs that have them but they can be damaged by a hole that is made in them or pushed over by a lawnmower or car door handle. The majority of non-remote transponder chips fail, and this could be attributed to a blown fuse.
If you're able to open up a key fob that is sealed and are willing to put up with the mess, you can take off the circuit board and examine the fuse with an instrument to verify diode function. If you're not comfortable with this, you can go to your local Oreilly or hardware store and use their RF frequency tester. This will inform you whether the key fob sends a signal.
Programming
Key fobs take lots of abuse and aren't completely indestructible. They can lose their pairing to the car's receiver due to shock or low battery, which requires them to be reprogrammed. A professional auto locksmith or dealer can reprogram your key fob to get it back up and running. If resetting or fixing your key fob fails it is possible to replace it.
