12 Stats About Remote Key Repair To Make You Look Smart Around The Water Cooler
How to Fix a Key Fob That isn't Working

If your key fob doesn't work and you're not sure why, you can fix it with just a few steps. The first step is to make sure it's not the backup remote.

If your backup remote cannot lock and unlock the doors of your car, it is most likely that the primary remote isn't functioning. Most car remote key failures result from circuitry or battery problems.

Battery

The battery in the key fob may wear out over time. It is easy to replace a battery. However it is essential that you use the correct kind. You can check the owner's manual or contact the manufacturer to find out the right type. It's also a good idea to examine the battery compartment carefully, as dead batteries sometimes release caustic chemicals that could damage the remote. If changing the batteries does not solve the problem it could be because there are other issues that require attention by a professional. If buttons are damaged or stuck, for example, it may be necessary disassemble the remote and rework each component. You can also try reprogramming your vehicle to recognize the new key fob.

Buttons

Key fobs can become dirty and worn-out from frequent use. It is not unusual for buttons to cease functioning, or require a hard push to make them work. This can be extremely frustrating especially if you're out of town and need to start your vehicle. Fortunately, even worn out or broken buttons can usually be fixed with just a bit of time and a few materials you have in the house.

First, make sure that the batteries are properly installed and that the indentation on the back of the button has been filled. Then, carefully remove the remote and inspect the circuit board. Examine for signs of rust or other signs the buttons have been damaged or worn. For instance there could be conductive paint missing. Use a Q-tip that has been dipped in alcohol to gently clean any membrane contacts that are damaged or have conductive paint missing. Don't rub too hard as this can damage the conductive paint and prevent the button from firing when you press it.

Check the battery connector terminals for loose solder connections. Soldering them back to their original position can restore the button's functionality if this is the case. You can follow the same procedure to restore functionality to any other loose connection inside the fob.

If, for instance, any of the buttons made of rubber that are on the front of the key fob stop functioning or require a difficult press to function it is likely that the graphite disks on the back of the button are deteriorating and require replacement. It is usually done by rubbing a pen over the disks. This should bring the button to life.

If none of these solutions work, or if you still not be able to get the button respond when pressed hard, it could be that the circuitry has failed. This can be fixed by a quick clean and re-soldering, but it is recommended to have an additional fob in case this method does not work for you.

Circuitry

Whether or not the key fob buttons function the circuit board in your remote might be dirty. A thorough inspection is often enough to resolve this problem. key fob repairs and broken cases are the most common causes of dirty boards. A damaged case could let water and other debris to get into the circuit board, which can cause it to short. Water can also get through pins and vias, which are small connectors that are found on the board.

If you're able to remove your key fob and don't mind making a mess, we can remove the solder from the buttons and put new ones in their place. It's also worth checking the connections between battery terminals. They can get very dirty and if they're loose, the buttons may not work or may even remain in their down position. Soldering the terminals, and putting the button back in their place is generally all it takes to restore the key fob that is not working to working order.

Non-Remote transponder chips

The sealed non-remote chips are more durable than their remote fobs, but they can be cracked in the event of a hole being drilled in them or when a door handle for a car or lawnmowers plows over them. The majority of non-remote transponder chips fail, and this could be attributed to an exploded fuse.

If you're not comfortable opening the key fob, you can remove the circuitboard and utilize a multimeter to check that the diode is working properly. If you're not comfortable with this, visit your local Oreilly or hardware store and use their RF frequency tester. key fob repairs will tell you whether the key fob sends an RF signal.

Programming

Key fobs take lots of abuse and aren't impervious to damage. They can lose their pairing to the receiver in your car due to shock or low battery, which calls for them to be reprogrammed. A professional auto locksmith or main dealer will be able to reprogram your key fob to get it back up and running. If resetting or repairing the keyfob is not working it is possible to replace it.
