How to Fix a Key Fob That isn't Working

If your key fob isn't working A few easy steps can fix it. First, ensure that it's not the backup remote.

If your backup remote can unlock and lock the doors of your vehicle, it is likely that the main remote isn't working. Most problems with car remote keys result from circuitry or battery problems.

Battery

It is not uncommon for the battery in the key fob for cars to wear out. It is simple to replace the battery. However it is crucial to select the right kind. You can refer to your owner's manual or call the manufacturer to find out the correct type. It is also a good idea to inspect the battery compartment carefully since dead batteries may leak caustic chemicals that can harm the remote. If changing the batteries doesn't solve the issue it could be because there are other issues that require attention by a professional. If buttons are broken or stuck for instance, it may be necessary take the remote apart and rework each component. You could also try reprogramming the vehicle to recognize the new device.

Buttons

Key fobs can become dirty and worn out from repeated use. This is not atypical however, it can cause buttons to cease working or require a hard press for them to work. This can be very frustrating especially when you're away from your home and have to start your car. Fortunately, even worn-out or malfunctioning buttons can often be fixed with a bit of time and some of the materials you have in the home.

First, ensure that the batteries are properly charged and that the indentation on the back of the button is filled. Open the remote carefully and inspect the circuit board. Examine for indications of rust or other indications that the buttons are damaged or worn out. For instance the paint that conducts electricity could be missing. Use a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol, gently clean any membrane contacts that have damaged or where conductive paint is missing. Don't rub too hard, as this could erode the conductive paint, and block the button from firing when pressed.

Check the battery connector's terminals carefully for any loose solder connections. Soldering them back into place will allow the button to function again in the event that this is the situation. You can use the same procedure to restore functionality to any other loose connection inside the fob.

In the end, if any of the rubber buttons on the front of the key fob aren't functioning or require a hard press to work it is likely that the graphite disks that are on the back of the button are wearing down and need to be replaced. This is usually done by rubbing a pencil across the disks. This should bring the button back to life.

If none of these solutions work or you not be able to get the button respond when pressed hard, it is possible that the circuitry has failed. This can sometimes be repaired with a quick clean and refitting, but it's best to have an extra fob available in the event this method doesn't work for you.

Circuitry

If the key fob buttons are working, the circuit board inside your remote might be dirty. This issue can be fixed through a thorough examination. Broken and damaged cases are the most common causes of boards that are dirty. A damaged case could allow water and other debris into the circuit board, which can cause it to short out. Water can also get through pins and vias, which are small connectors found on the board.

If you're skilled enough to open your key fob, and aren't afraid of making a mess, we can remove the buttons from their sockets and solder in new ones. Also, you should check the connections between the battery terminals. They can become extremely filthy and if they're not tight enough, the buttons might not function or even stay in their down position. Soldering visit their website and buttons back to their original positions is often enough to restore a non-working fob to working.

Non-Remote Transponder Chips

The non-remote chips sealed in a sealed case are more durable than their remote fobs, but they can be cracked in the event of a hole being drilled in them, or when a door handle for a car or lawnmowers is pushed over them. Failures of the fuse are typically the cause of non-remote chip failures.

If you're able to remove a sealed non-remote key fob and can tolerate the mess, you can easily remove the circuit board and check the fuse using a multimeter for proper diode function. If you're not sure with this, you can go to your local Oreilly or hardware store and test their RF frequency tester. This will tell you whether the key fob sends signals.

Programming

Key fobs endure a lot of abuse and aren't indestructible. They can lose their pairing to the receiver in your car due to shock or low battery, which requires them to be reprogrammed. A professional auto locksmith or the main dealer can reprogram the keyfob and get it working again. If resetting or repairing the keyfob is not working it may be necessary to replace it.
