What A Weekly Repair Window Project Can Change Your Life
When It's Time to Repair Windows

If your windows are in need of repair, it's important to work with care. Wear safety glasses and gloves to protect yourself from glass shards.

A quick solution to a damaged window is to apply a plastic covering over the crack. This will keep rain, snow, and insects from entering your home.

Glass that has cracked

Cracked glass can make your home look less appealing and allow drafts to pass through. It doesn't matter if cracks result from an impact, such as soccer or a baseball, or stress, like a sudden temperature change, it is essential to have them fixed as quickly as you can in order to prevent further damage and to keep your windows working properly.

If your window is damaged but not broken, an easy fix is to apply clear tape to it. This is a simple, inexpensive solution to shield your window from water, dust bugs, and other debris. It also keeps out the elements.

If the crack is severe or is getting worse, it's recommended to consult an expert. An experienced glazier can identify the cause of the crack and suggest a suitable repair method.

Impact cracks are the most common window cracks. They usually occur when a solid object is thrown at your window with enough force that it breaks. These cracks are typically accompanied by a starburst pattern of lines and shattered pieces that can be dangerous if they come loose. This crack can compromise the gas between the panes of your double-pane window and reduce its energy efficiency.

Another type of crack is a stress crack which can develop gradually as time passes, due to extreme temperature fluctuations or other environmental factors. These cracks begin around the edges of your window and can eventually grow into full-blown cracks.

A more serious but still possible crack is the pressure crack. This is a curvy, curved line that can extend across the window on one or more sides. It can be caused by low or high pressure, which can cause the glass to expand or contract.

There are other products that can be used to repair cracks in glass when you're willing to go beyond tape and nail varnish. Glass Repair Film, while more expensive, will give your windows more protection and durability. If you prefer to go the DIY method epoxy is a sturdy adhesive that can be used to fill cracks to prevent further damage and make your window look like it did not have cracks at all!

Leaking Windows

If you notice a damp spot under your window or the wood around it appears soft or rotting it could be time to replace your windows. In excess moisture, it creates the perfect environment for mold and mildew which can create a range of issues for your home. They can decrease the quality of indoor air, lead to sagging of drywall and worsen symptoms of allergies. If not checked, they could cause structural damage to your home.

It is recommended to contact an expert if water is visible or comes from outside. Leaking windows are one of the leading causes of mold and structural damage and should not be left untreated.

In many cases, a thin layer of caulking is enough to stop the leaks. Before applying the new caulking, you'll need to clean the area and take off any caulking that is in place.

You'll also have to inspect the weep holes in the frame to make sure they're not clogged with debris. They're designed to drain excess rainwater, but they can get blocked by insect carcasses and other debris in time.

If windows are double-paned, you'll also need to check the seal between the glass and the frame. This creates the gas from escaping between the panes, making windows more energy efficient. The seal could wear down with time and let water get into the home.

Another sign of leaks is the presence of water-based stains on the ceiling and walls. These occur when drywall is saturated by moisture which weakens the fibers and causes discoloration. There is also the possibility of peeling paint as a result of water weakening its adhesive properties and tearing away from the wall.

Faux Muntins & Mullions

In the past, muntins and mullions (or glazing bars in the UK) separated and held glass panes in the classic multi-pane windows. After WWII, larger expanses glass with tempered were made available. They're mainly used as a decorative feature in some older homes.

Rain or wind can cause damage to a single support or a small portion of them, resulting in cracks in the window. You can repair the majority of these brittle and decaying parts.

First, use a rag to clean the affected areas. Use window repair near me -based cleaning products that doesn't leave any residue. Then, remove any loose or rotting parts and use an exacta-knife cut the intersections between the horizontal and vertical painted window muntins. After you've trimmed the intersections, you can tape off the lower portion of the window frame using painter's tape. Apply a thick coat of white paint to the areas that you lightly painted in the first stroke. Let the paint dry completely before removing the tape and applying a second coat.

If the issue is more severe like an hourglass-shaped crack in middle of the window, it's better to replace the sash. In these instances it is essential to locate a replacement window that matches the style and size of the current one.

For a less expensive alternative, you can also install an attached grid window. These windows come with a complete pane of glass that is topped with the muntins being that are glued to the surface, giving them a divided look. They're not as energy-efficient as traditional windows, however.

If you're looking for an easy method to modernize your windows, consider installing an additional drip cap to stop water from leaking around the window frame. The majority of home centers sell aluminum drip cap options for about $20. They are much simpler to install than replacement windows sashes, and will provide the same functions as a genuine mullion, or muntin.

Broken Sashes & Frames

A damaged window sash must be a signal that you should contact a professional. A broken sash, if left unchecked can cause water leaks, wood rot, and other serious issues to the frame and sill. If you've got a damaged sash, you should replace it right away to ensure that the window is sealed.

Often, the issue is caused by worn or improperly hung sash cords. It's easy to replace these cords on most double-hung window models. First, you'll need to remove tabs made of metal that hold the sash. To do this push up on one side (it isn't important which) of the sash and then pull in toward the opposite side to remove it from the window frame. To reach the sash cords, you'll need to carefully remove the strip that separates the sash.

After you've removed the sash, be sure to look at its metal tabs and compare them to those of the new sash. If they're not the same, it will be difficult to place the new sash into its proper place and could affect the way that the sash performs. This can be easily corrected by placing the tabs at their proper places on the new window.

You'll need to inspect your window frame as well, for any damage or rot. It's a good idea to do regularly, as wood shrinks and wears down over time. If you find any visible damage it should be addressed as soon as you can to avoid a bigger problem from developing.

If your window frames have begun to deteriorate they can be treated using a homemade preserver made with half mineral spirits and boiled Linseed. After the treatment has dried for two days, you are able to re-finish your frames using high-quality latex paint. A new coat of paint can aid in protecting your window from the elements, as well.
