The Most Hilarious Complaints We've Been Hearing About Remote Key Repair
How to Fix a Key Fob That isn't Working

If your key fob isn't functioning There are a few simple steps that can be taken to fix it. The first step is to make sure it's not the backup remote.

If the backup is able to lock and unlock your car doors, then there's a likely issue with the primary remote. The most common causes for car remote key failure are issues with the circuitry or battery.

Battery

The battery in the key fob may get worn out over the course of time. It is relatively easy to change out the battery, however it is essential to make sure that you choose the correct type that you can refer to your owner's manual, or contact the dealer for the manufacturer to determine the type of battery you need. It is also important to inspect the battery compartment, as dead batteries can leak toxic chemicals that could damage the remote. If replacing the batteries doesn't solve the issue, it may be that there are other issues that require professional attention. For example, if buttons seem to be stuck or broken It may be necessary to take the remote apart and rework its parts. You can also try reprogramming the vehicle to recognize the new fob.

Buttons

From repeated use, key fobs may wear out and become dirty. It is not common for buttons to stop working, or to require a long press to get them working. car remote key repair can be a hassle especially when you're away from home and you need to start your car. Fortunately, even worn-out or broken buttons can usually be fixed with a bit of time and a few materials you may already have around the house.

First, check that the batteries are properly placed and that the indentation at the back of the button is filled. Then, carefully open up the remote and look at the circuit board. Examine for indications of rust or other signs the buttons are worn or damaged. For example the paint that conducts electricity could be missing. Use a Q-tip that has been dipped in alcohol, gently clean any membrane contacts that are damaged or where conductive paint is missing. Do not rub too vigorously as this can damage the conductive paint, and block the button from firing when you press it.

Check the battery connector terminals carefully for any loose solder connections. Soldering them back to their original position can restore the button's functionality if this is the case. You can use the same method to restore functionality to any other loose connection within the fob.

If, for instance, any of the buttons made of rubber that are on the front of the key fob stop working or require a long press to function it is likely the graphite disks on the back of the button are deteriorating and need to be replaced. This can usually be done by rubbing a pencil across the disks, which will bring the button back to working.

If none of this is helpful, or if the button doesn't respond to a hard push, then it may be that the circuit board itself has become damaged. It is possible to fix this issue by cleaning and re-soldering the button however, you should have another spare in case it does not work.

Circuitry

Whether or not the key fob buttons function the circuit board in your remote might be dirty. A thorough examination is usually enough to fix this problem. The most common causes for dirty circuit boards are water and damaged cases. A damaged case can allow water and other debris into the circuit board, which can cause it to short. Water can also damage pins and connectors that are small on the board, referred to as via's.

If you are handy enough to open your key fob and don't mind making a mess, we can take the buttons out of their sockets and solder in new ones. Also, you should check the connections between the battery terminals. If they are loose, the buttons might not function or get stuck in their down position. Soldering the terminals and buttons to their original positions is often enough to bring a non-working fob back to working.

Non-Remote Transponder Chips

The non-remote chips that are sealed are more durable than remote fobs, however they can be cracked when a hole is made into them or in the event that a door handle of a car or lawnmower runs over them. Fuse failures are usually to blame for non-remote chip failures.

If you're not confident opening the key fob, remove the circuitboard and utilize a multimeter to check that the diode is operating properly. If you're not confident doing this, go to your local hardware store or the Oreilly's and they usually have an radio frequency tester that can tell you if the key fob is sending signals.

Programming

Key fobs are subject to many abuses and aren't completely indestructible. They may lose their connection to the car's receiver due to shock or low battery, which requires them to be reprogrammed. A professional auto locksmith or main dealer, can reprogram your keyfob to get it up and running again. If, in the unlikely event that resetting and repairing your key fob fails, it could be time to replace it entirely.
