Elvis Movie Review
Director Baz Luhrmann’s wildly exuberant adaptation of Elvis Presley’s life story is the movie America needs right now. It’s a love letter to rock and roll as it was being born in the ’50s, a portrait of a man who was a generational hero — but who was also a pawn in a fierce cultural war. It’s a movie about the rise of celebrity, and the birth of a new, capitalist concept of fame. And it’s a tragic portrait of an artist who was not able to keep his soul or his music intact in the face of exploitation and the demands of fame.

The movie is a blast of breathless filmmaking that can’t stop moving, a whirlwind ride through honky-tonks and tent revivals and Beale Street blues shows. It’s a portrait of a man who lived at the intersection of two fierce cultures, and was caught in the crossfire of a battle over sexual identity. The film’s energy is suffocating, and its details are too often omitted in favor of broad strokes, but it’s still an epic journey that’s hard to resist.

In a movie that’s as horny as it is bombastic, Butler makes the case that Elvis was no innocent, a man whose sex appeal was as potent as his talent. ซีรี่ย์จีน พากย์ไทย is all but a carnal experience, and his hip-shaking, pelvic thrusts are accompanied by offscreen ooh’s and aah’s that reach saturation levels that could erupt into orgasms. But even as this film is brash, loud and maximalist, it maintains a distance from its subject, keeping him at arm’s length enthralled by his glamour but not his soul.

One of the film’s most important accomplishments is that it settles a question that has long been raging around the King’s connection to Black music. It situates him as an appreciator of the Black music that influenced his, and in some cases defined it. It places songs like Arthur Crudup’s “That’s All Right” and Big Mama Thornton’s “Hound Dog” back into the mouths of the Black musicians who first sang them, and it modernizes a few of Elvis’ classics with hip hop and other styles that point directly back to Black music.

In the end, the film’s depiction of Elvis as a gyrating powerhouse of sensuality and cool isn’t just evocative; it’s heartbreaking. And when he finally stops spinning his pelvis and begins to speak, we hear the music of his soul unchained. That’s when the movie truly delivers, and it’s a fitting conclusion to a wildly over-the-top epic.
