Bangkok avenue meals vendors welcome return of vacationers to Khao San Road
Street sellers on Bangkok’s Khao San Road are celebrating the welcome return of overseas vacationers and say life is finally starting to return to normal. The Bangkok Post has spoken to a selection of vacationers and the street food vendors serving them. 51 yr previous Wan Suripar is one of them and she or he hopes this is the start of the end in relation to the hardship she’s faced for nearly 2 years now.
“I see many international tourists coming back after Thailand re-opened to completely vaccinated travellers. Many road distributors are hoping to get back to the good outdated days. I truly have many extra prospects. I’m so happy that I am making more money from selling meals. I like this sort of business ambiance. This market has come again to life for the past 2 months.”

Street sellers in the capital have been devastated by the Covid-19 pandemic, with Thailand’s borders shut and strict disease prevention measures which means most non-essential businesses have been shut. Since the country’s re-opening on November 1 nonetheless, things are finally starting to search for on Khao San Road, normally a haven for backpackers and others travelling on a price range.
Businesses such as eating places, clothing stores, and therapeutic massage outlets are re-opening, along with the road meals carts, all of them adopting the measures that govern the so-called “new normal”, together with hand sanitiser, face masks and social distancing. For now, however, nightlife and leisure venues stay shut.
Paryarnar Wonsi is a 43 yr old avenue meals vendor who has worked on Khao San Road since 2008. Speaking to the Bangkok Post, she says she’s never skilled challenges like these she’s had to face since the start of Covid-19.

Simon Cornwall, a tourist visiting from his home in Indonesia, says he’s been coming to Khao San Road since 2017 and hopes to see it return to the bustling road it once was.
“I have been to Khao San almost every year since 2017, and love the loopy atmosphere, although I prefer to stay in soi Rambuttri close by, as it’s a bit more chilled out. I hope will probably be again to ordinary and crowded once more.”

Businesses and tourists alike will be hoping there isn't a going again, however Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is now proposing a return to mandatory quarantine for international arrivals, amid issues about the rapidly-spreading Omicron variant.
