How to Fix Faulty Key Repairs
A damaged key fob could make your life miserable. With the right tools and instructions it's easy to fix these problems.
Always ensure that you ground yourself prior to beginning any repairs to eliminate static electricity. It only takes a second and is a good practice when working with electronics in general.
Check for any debris underneath the key that is defective. Breadcrumbs and other bits of food often get stuck under keys, preventing them from being pushed in properly.
Broken Car Keys
Car keys are something we take for granted, until they stop or break working at the most inconvenient times. If your car keys don't work, it can be a hassle to open your trunk in order to grab groceries, open your doors to get to a place, or start your engine in order to get to work.
Over time, keys to automobiles can wear out. Dropping or knocking them can cause damage and the internal parts can become worn out to the point where they are no longer functional. This is a serious issue, as you will be unable to operate your vehicle unless you have an additional key or your mechanic fixes the issue.
Fortunately, the majority of broken keys for cars can be repaired or replaced quickly. If your key is just broken inside the lock or ignition, you may sometimes remove the remaining portion of the key using pliers or a coated wire. A locksmith can also supply you with tools for removal that slide along the key and grasp the broken pieces in a pincer-like manner.
If the car key has been broken in half, an easy and cost-effective solution is to super glue the two pieces back together. It can be difficult to ensure that the pieces are aligned correctly, but it can yield great results. It's a good idea keep a pair of scissors and a roll tape in case you have to alter the alignment just slightly.
Replace the battery in your car key fob in order to repair a damaged key. If your car key fob won't turn on and you don't have an alternative then this is the ideal solution. You can do this depending on the model and type of your car by removing the fob, then opening it with a screwdriver.
If the issue is more serious for instance, the key fob is completely inactive or doesn't switch on at all, you will require replacement. This can be done at the dealership, but an auto locksmith will usually be more affordable. They will visit you and make the needed repairs or even replace the key fob.
Broken Key Fobs
Car key fobs are not durable, and like all electronic devices is susceptible to issues at some point. If they stop working, they are not difficult to fix. You'll first have to determine the problem.
The battery is often the cause when the keyfob ceases to function. The most simple and economical solution is to replace the battery. It's possible to do this at home.
If replacing the battery doesn't work, you can take it apart and cleaning it. The circuit board of your fob contains "contact pads" that correspond to every button on the fob. (Lock buttons, trunk buttons etc.) Contact pads have a rubbery feel and are coated with an electric-conducting film that wears off over time. You can clean your key fob contacts with the use of rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab to get rid of any corrosion.
If you suspect that the contacts are broken or loose If you suspect that the contacts are damaged or loose, you can use a pair of tweezers. It is best to apply silicone to the back of the key fob first before you insert the new contacts. Silicone will make the contacts more secure and keep out water.
Another reason to consider a non-functioning key fob is that it is no longer paired with the vehicle. When you use a key fob, it sends the car a message that informs it of what you're trying to do. If the key fob is un-paired it will not recognize the vehicle, and it will no longer allow you to start your engine.
If you are unable to get your key fob to re-pair with the car, it's time to call a locksmith or dealership technician. They will have the equipment necessary to reprogram the fob to make it work. You'll likely have to pay for the service, but it's much less than buying a brand new key fob.

If the keyboard key ceases to function, it can be a nightmare. The first step is to ensure that the key isn't blocked by anything physical. Dust, hair and other debris could build up over time and hinder a key's movement or cause interference to its circuitry. Try gently getting rid of the key and then clean the area beneath it with a rag and ruby alcohol. Sometimes, this is all it takes to make your key work again.
If the key still doesn't work, it's possible that it's an issue with your software. Some keys are mapped to specific actions in games and if your key isn't working as you'd expect it to, check your game settings to confirm that the key is correctly mapped.
You might also try reinstalling the drivers for your keyboard to fix the problem. Outdated or corrupted drivers can cause your keyboard to stop working, so you should always ensure that they are updated as often as possible.
Another possibility is that the key is simply broken. Key switches are comprised of two circuits, and they may wear out over time to the point that they cannot longer detect the press. If this is the case the best choice is to replace the entire keyboard since it's likely to cease to perform as it should.
If you've gone through all of these fixes but the keyboard still doesn't respond then it's time to get your laptop or external keyboard examined by an expert. It could be that the membrane covering your keyboard is damaged or that one of the keys is malfunctioning.
To determine this you'll have to test the keys using a keyboard tester site. The website will tell you whether or not the keys register correctly during an examination, and if they do, it's most likely to be due to a software issue. The other solutions can be applied to restore full functionality. Alternatively, you could use an external keyboard as a temporary solution until the internal keyboard is repaired or replaced.
Keys That Don't Work
Keys that don't work are an enormous pain, but fortunately, they're usually fairly simple to fix. A malfunctioning key could be caused by a piece or grime under the button or it may simply not be properly connected to your laptop or keyboard. If you are unsure then clean the keys using canned air and blow out any dust or dirt.
It is also possible that the key has become misaligned with the lock. It's possible to fix this issue with an expert. However, it's more likely that the key will need to be replaced. If you have an electronic key and it cannot be turned using an iron key the transponder chip might have stopped working. You'll need a new key to be programmed.
If your external keyboard or laptop keys seem to not be registering any action in any way, you could try a key test website. This can help you find out if there is any issues with the software or the keyboard itself.
Another reason why a single key not performing its function is that the switch isn't working properly. You can check if your keyboard is mechanical by looking underneath the keycap to see whether any debris is stuck. If you spot anything, clean it out by using canned air. Then take off the keycap. This will let you replace the hooks which connect the retainer and switch and hopefully restore function to your key.
If you have a keyboard key that fails to perform the expected function only in one program, then it is likely that the keyboard settings of the game have mapped the key to perform a different function. Check the settings of your keyboard and try pressing the key again to see whether it's functioning as intended. If you're still having problems, it is best to purchase an entirely new keyboard. It can be put in place by a professional. This is true, especially when you play a sport which requires a lot more typing.
