The city council, however, was not pleased with this decision. The city council was worried about losing control over the labor market since the nascent organization threatened to organize all domestic workers in the city. In an effort to curb the power of black washers the council started a campaign that enforced the fee of $25 per year for all laundry workers regardless of whether or whether or not they belong to The Washing Society.

The women who worked in the washer proved to be a formidable force, and their perseverance paid off in the end. The Washing Society

In the summer of 1881 20 African American washerwomen met to form the Washing Society, or union, in order to advocate for better wages and respect as well as control over their work. They used grassroots organizing strategies to canvass neighborhoods by door-to-door canvassing, and local ward meetings to recruit laundresses. In only three short weeks, the strike expanded to over 3,000 participants. Though white newspapers strongly criticized their use of direct and militant action, it proved highly efficient in generating the power and the unity they needed to win.

Their demand for just one dollar per dozen pounds of laundry would have dramatically increased their own earnings. They were able to convince customers to join in their cause, and even encouraged other domestic workers such as cooks or maids to organize. This astonishment at the success of the capacity of black women to unite in a mass way and employ grassroots strategies to disrupt business as usual.

As with many other blacks of the South the women of this group had few employment options beyond sharecropping and household labor. Many women moved to the cities to find more lucrative employment opportunities, such as working as cooks or maids. These positions offered more autonomy than those in rural areas, but the pay was still subsistence and not enough to sustain a family.

During Reconstruction, Black women's labor was considered vital to the city and should not be ignored. The Washerwomen's Strike was an opportunity to remind the white establishment could not operate without the women. The Washing Society campaign was successful in highlighting the need for respect and dignity at work.

The City of Atlanta

Atlanta is a bustling metropolis with many places of interest and cultural centers which include the High Museum of Art and Woodruff Arts Center. Other notable landmarks include Piedmont Park and the Margaret Mitchell House. The city also houses numerous bars and restaurants and is a regional business and sports center. The city is also a major military hub and a major hub for federal government activity for the Southeast.

The Struggle
