Why Repair Window Is More Difficult Than You Imagine
When It's Time to Repair Windows

Often, a single or small group of these wooden supports could get damaged by wind or rain leaving cracks in the window. You can repair the majority of these brittle and decaying components.

First, use a rag to clean the affected areas. Use a cleaner based on ammonia that will not leave residue. Remove any rotting or loose components and use an exacta-knife to reduce the intersections between vertical and horizontal painted window muntins. After trimming the intersections then, use painter's masking tape to seal off the lower part of the window frame. Now, you're able to apply a thick layer of white paint, paying close attention to areas which were lightly coated on the first go. Often, the issue is caused by worn or improperly installed cords for sash. It is easy to replace these cords in most double-hung window models. To begin, you'll need dislodge the metal tabs that keep the sash in place. To do this, push up on one side (it does not matter which side) of the sash and then pull in toward the opposite side to take it from the window frame. To get access to the cords of the sash, you'll need to carefully remove the strip that separates the sash.

It's important that you examine the metal tabs of the old sash with the new one. If they're not the same, it will be hard to put the new one in its place and affect how the sash operates. This can be easily corrected by placing the tabs in their proper places on the new window.

In addition to the sashes, you'll need to check your window frame for any problems or rot. This is a good thing to check regularly, since wood will shrink and wear down over time. If you spot any visible damage it should be fixed as quickly as you can, to avoid an even bigger issue from arising.

If your window frames are deteriorating and are in need of repair, you can treat them using a homemade preserver made of half mineral spirits and boiled in linseed. After the treatment has dried, you are able to finish your frames with the finest latex paint. A new coat of paint can protect your window from the elements as well.
